I have had my ring for a year now and have had the setting tightened 4 times..about to be 5!!!! After the first two times, i had the stone reset in a similar four prong cathedral setting. That lasted about a month, and i was back in again to have the new setting tightened. I can hear it when if i tap my fingers and now i can actually see it shift. I quit wearing it b/c i''m terrified that it going to be gone nest time i look at it. The place that we bought both the stone and setting are very reputable and have fixed it without any problems. However, they told me that because of the cut (princess) i would always have to deal with this problem. It''s a little over a carat princess cut stone in a four prong cathedral setting. Its beautiful and i love it, but i can''t wear it! Is it wrong to feel that i should be able to wear my ER without worry?!?!
Both me and my husband are getting really frustrated. Is my jeweler feeding me a load of BS or is this true about a princess cut? Any suggestion???

Gosh, I''m so sorry this is happening to your diamond! No matter what cut of diamond you have, you should never have a setting that comes loose 5 times in one year.

NOT that I''m accusing you of anything, but how do you handle your ring? Hopefully you aren''t pulling on it at all (when you check to see if it''s loose) or twisting, because that''ll loosen it up pretty well.

A suggestion could be to get thicker prongs, or possibly v-tip prongs instead of claw prongs, both which could strengthen the setting a lot and keep it from loosening. But before changing anything I''d suggest going to a different jeweler than you''re going to now, to perhaps get a second opinion on what the problem is.

Good luck!

(btw - I''d love to see pics of this pretty ring you''re talking about!)

Thanks for the advice. I really don''t know what the problem is. I tend to think that I''m not too hard on it...but i am a RN tho and we tend to be hard on our hands. But i quit wearing it to work a while back. I try not to mess with it too much; i mainly notice that its lose when i tap my finger (ie- steering wheel in my car when i''m singing...yes, i'' m a star in my car). It''s so frustrating! After i got the second setting, i was really careful; only wearing it on occasion. I''ll try and get some pics of it up as soon as i get back home. The prongs look like chevrons from the side....I''m no jewelry expert so i use layman terms.

If the reality is that i am too hard on my setting, would the above suggestion be suitable for somebody that is pretty active?

I will definitely ask about those types of prongs when i go next week. I am looking for another jeweler, but as anyone can imagine, i kind of have a bitter taste after all of this trouble.

I''d try taking the ring to a new jeweler, and see if there''s a problem with the metal or something. No, its not normal for princess cuts- if that were the case nobody''d get them! Unless you''re doing something incredibly hardcore with your ring- and it sounds like you''ve been barely wearing it, really, so I''m doubting that- you shouldn''t have the stone coming loose all the time.

If the new jeweler says that there''s nothing structurally wrong, and/or it comes loose again, I might try to save up for a bezel setting. It is weird that two settings in a row would have the same exact problem...

That''s unfortunate you can''t wear it much.

I''d be bummed in your situation too!

Does your ring slip round on your finger? If you have to keep straightening it up are you pushing on the head of the ring to make it straight again? That would loosen the stone up.
