I just got back from the appraisal and I finished my search. I ended up with the second diamond that I mentioned in this thread.
I now have to give out four thank yous. First of all, thanks to the PriceScope.com community (yes you) for helping educate me on this. Next, I''d like to thank my friend for pointing me to this website in the first place. Third, I have to thank Abazias, which ended up with the best deal I found (more on that later). Lastly, thanks to David at Abazias who found me the perfect diamond at a price below what I expected possible.
Just to fill in all the details, I was looking for something in the 1.70-1.75 carat range, SI1 and I color. I also wanted to stay under $8500 and get an "ideal" (not hearts and arrows or AGS 0, but just something that was in the top percentile) cut. David came back and said that he had a 1.63 ct. stone that had a similar diameter to many of the 1.75 stones (which it did) and it just might be right for me. I plugged it''s dimentions into the HCA and it came out an 0.8, so I figured I had to see it.
Having looked at very few diamonds close, I didn''t trust my eyes. I just figured that it looked diamondy, but then again, plastic can look diamondy to me too. It was until I got back from Jeff Averbook''s appraisal service that I realized I had gotten a better than normal deal. He independantly graded it and it came out the same as the EGL report. He actually said it was more of an I minus, but not a J. He also said it was a strong SI1, but probably leaned more towards an SI2 than a VS2, but not much. The inclusions were towards the edges and white (better than black). He went online to a New York diamond trading floor with thousands of dealers to see what the price of such a diamond would cost there. He said the prices were typically something like 30% under Rappaport there. The cheapest he could get a diamond with similar numbers was $7800 and said that it ranged up to $8700. That''s when I told him that I paid $6300 (wire). He didn''t quite know what to make of it, but suggested that maybe because it was borderline in color, the seller had discounted it.
So all in all, I''m thrilled, beyond words in the deal. I figure I saved just more than $3100 for a very similar (though a smaller 1.60 ct) stone at a local discount jeweler.
