So, I am panicked!

My 2.5ct diamond ring has been missing since sometime yesterday. I put it on the nightstand along with my eternity band. When I went to bed last night only the band was there, but not the engagement ring.
We tore our bedroom apart today looking for it. We even took the bed apart, emptied all the drawers. etc. We are working on the rest of the house, but my gut says we may not find it.

I have my ring insured thruough Chubb. I am worried about making a claim, and if it will cause them to cancel my entire homeowners insurance policy. I live in Florida and finding insurance here can be tricky.
Also, my prior insurance company, Jewelers Mutual, insisted that my jeweler appraise the ring for a $48,000 whcih they said was retial value. It is a nicely cut 2.46 VS2 G. in a $4,000 mounting. I know I can replace it for far less than that! (Imagine what I could get for that kind of money!!!).

Anyone been through this? Any calming words you can send my way would be appreicated!!!!

Catherine

Try using a flashlight. Look all around your bed, the flooring, carpeting, and nightstand. Any chance it's in your bathroom, in jewelry cleaner, etc.. Look by your kitchen sink.... Gosh I hope you find it, take deep breaths. Retrace your steps. Good luck!!!

OMG!! Do you have kids or pets that could have made off with it? Take a few deep breaths and look everywhere, before reporting it missing. Unless someone was in the house--it HAS to be there. Let us know what happens.

I wouldn't make a claim just yet! Was there anyone else in your house since you've seen the ring on your nightstand? If not, then it's probably misplaced because let's face it, it can't get up and walk away...right? Check under your bed, all over the floors, if you have carpet, I'd get on hands/knees with a flashlight and low/no lighting and see if you cant spot it glimmering in your flashlight's path. It's gotta be somewhere unless you had strangers in your home...Relax and get looking missy!

ETA: What Marian said! Do you have pets or kids? If so start poop checking immediately. Other than that, it's possible that when you made your bed you poofed the cover when you were making it and it caused the ring to get knocked off the stand..?

Were you both gone at any time before you noticed it missing? If not, it has to be there.

Did it fall in the drawer of said nightstand? Underneath?

Do you have a cat? I''ve heard on here that cats have been known sometimes to eat rings.

Hold off on making the claim till you are ABSOLUTELY certain. I don''t know if it''s the same with Chubb, but I had a ring stolen once and my insurance paid what it would cost to replace it, NOT what it was appraised for. And if you claim, your insurance rates might go up!

Ransack that house! check behind the furniture 6 times! CHeck pockets! Check carpet edges! Check bed linens!

Hope you find it.

It's got to be around. You have to figure- if it were stolen, they would have taken the eternity band too, along with other things as well!
Best of luck finding it!

I''m really hoping you find it. I agree completely about waiting to call the insurance company until all other avenues have been exhausted. I used to work for an insurance company, and the adjusters would be pretty brutal about trying *not* to have to pay out a claim, especially if you couldn''t reasonably call it theft.

oh dear, i hope you find it!! try checking between your bedframe and mattress, sometimes there is a ''lip'' or ledge in there that it may have caught on, or it could just be wedged between the mattress and paneling. ditto the flashlight, that''s how i found a missing diamond stud recently. and my first thought was also pets, anyone there have an appetite for diamonds? (besides you of course!

If your stone has fluorescence, get a "stinkfinder" black light from Petco and look for your ring after dark too.

If that doesn''t work, move your nightstand and be sure it didn''t fall behind the furniture, in the wedge between carpet and wall if applicable, and if that fails... borrow your nieces, nephews, and the good kids of your friends between the ages of 5 and 12, turn them loose in your bedroom and offer $100 to whomever finds your ring. (Those kids will be more inventive and thorough than even you if the bounty is worthy enough.)

Hey, did you make your bed, as in change your sheets the day it disappeared? If so, look in the laundry basket, the washer/dryer, and anywhere along the path between bed and laundry basket and laundry room. If you did, it could have gotten caught up in the sheets and when you balled up the sheets it would fall deep inside the sheets and you wouldn''t even know it. In which case it could be in any of those places. If this is a possibility, then also get a repair man out to the house to look inside your washer/dryer. And check the lint box too...

Oh no! I really hope you find it! I''m also curious to know if you had people in your house during the time you noticed it missing. If not, it has to be somewhere! Good luck and keep us posted!

Well, we still have not found it!

I mentally went throuh the weekend and realized that there was about on hour to almost two hours when no one was in the house. I also remembered what one of my neighbors told me about a week ago. We had a "ladies night" with several of the mom''s on the street (we live in a one street, gated community of 23 homes). She said she looked out her back window one day and there was a man in her back yard. Although our community is gated, it backs up to a conservation, and on the other side are some other communities. It is possible for someone to get into our area through the conservation. However, there are gators, wild baord and bobacts back there!!!!

My husband wants to look for one more day before we file a police report and a claim wth the insurance company. I am just sick about it!!!

Do you think Chubb will cancel all of my policies through them (auto, home, liability, and valuable articles) if I file a claim?

How stressful!!!!! Im so sorry you cant find your ring, I really wish you the best.

As for your question... isnt it illegal for them to do that? I know they can raise your rates, but I dont think they can cancel your whole policy...

Seems weird that someone would break in and only take the ring, ecpecially since they coudn''t have known it was there prior to break in. I''d suggest doing a whole house inventory before calling the police!

Good luck!

I would rent a metal detector before filing any reports -- agree that it seems strange that the eternity band would be left behind.

Best of luck!

It may seem strange that if a thief took the ring he/she didn't take more, but consider how much time it may have given the jerk to move the ring before any officials are alerted. Leaving one behind is quite a trick to play if the thief wanted to prey on your self-doubt and make you think you'd lost it yourself. Have you checked for any signs of unlawful entry? I certainly hope you find it!!!

Even though you live in a gated community, it is still possible but less likely someone could have entered your home and taken your ring. Someone could have slipped in an unlocked door and grabbed the ring in a second. I know from experience ... it happened to me recently.... I was working in the front yard and someone came over an 8 foot concrete wall in my backyard and got in the unlocked back door. Scary thing is I was in the process of moving yard waste from the back yard to the pickup pile in the front yard and the thief had to have been watching me closely to get in and out of the house without me seeing them. They grabbed my e-ring and watch and were gone. They got into our neighbor''s house the same way... over an 8 foot wall and through a briefly unlocked back door. The fact that your eternity ring was still there surely confuses the issue. Hard to think anyone would leave that behind if it was in clear view. I didn''t realize my stuff was gone immediately as I hadn''t been wearing them because I''d been painting that week. So by the time I called the police, they basically just took a report. My neighbors, on the other hand, noticed immediately and called the police ASAP... the cops basically handled it the same way... took a report. The officer I spoke with said when jewelry is stolen it''s almost never recovered which was hard to hear. Anyway, I hope and PRAY that maybe you accidentally knocked it off the nightstand (could have landed in another container or your purse or a pocket) and ended up getting relocated into another room. One of my diamond studs once got lost that way.... it was on a nightstand and when I grabbed my shirt off the bed it somehow hit the nightstand and flicked the earring up and into a small crack in a window casement --- where it remains to this day. We''d have had to tear the wall down to retrieve it. So strange things can happen... Good Luck!!!!

The police told me that the first place many thieves look is in the master bedroom... on the dressers, nightstands, etc. because many people leave their jewelry there.

I didn''t have my ring and watch insured through Chubb Insurance but through American Family on a rider with our home insurance. They would either replace the ring and watch themselves or cut me a check for the amount they COULD replace them for.... and not my actual appraisal amount. I took the cash for the ring even though that was quite a bit less than the appraisal because I didn''t want to be stuck with what they chose and have zero input on the ring. With the watch, they actually gave me a new Rolex because they had a deal with the company and could get the watch below retail so that worked out OK. So far.... knock wood... our insurance rates have not gone up because of our claim. I''ve always heard good things about Chubb Insurance, though, so hopefully you''ll have a good experience if you have to file a claim. But here''s hoping it''s all a false alarm and you find your ring ASAP!

buy a big LED flash light then turn off the lights and look with the flashlight.
It will make the diamond shine like crazy and easier too find.
Start low laying on the ground then move higher and higher moving stuff then go low again.

I knocked one off the nightstand once and it rolled under the queen sz. bed and stopped at about the halfway point. I would never have thought it could travel that far.

Is there a register in the floor anywhere in the vicinity? A ring could go down through most of those, especailly the decorative ones with a lot of big open spaces. If that's the case, the ring would land in the ductwork someplace.

Checked shoes or slippers?

Any luck finding your ring???

It is still missing!

We had the police out today and they have assigned two detectives to the case. Apparently, there is a group of teenagers (kids of weatlhy athletes that live not far from here, yikes!) who has beeen busted numerous times for theft.

The police feel it is very unlikely that someone would try to pawn it due to the size and value of the ring. However, they have two officers working on canvasing the local Pawn Shops. The detectives are coming out tomorrow to interview neighbors. The officer that was here today was terrific....they talked to each of my kids individually and came to the conclusion that they know nothing about the disappearance of the ring.

They have called twice since they left. Once to suggest we rent a metal detector and check the yard, and the second to suggest that since we have dogs we consider that they swallowed it and run the metal detector over thier stomaches! Thye hinted that checking the yard where the dogs "go" was also a good idea (yuck!!).

I also filed the claim with Chubb today. They called me a few minutes ago to take a recorded statement.

I will keep you all posted!

Thanks for all of your kind words!!

Fingers crossed that your ring will be found and soon!

It probably would have been easier if one of your children did take it. I have a close friend who still hasn''t worked out how to tell her mother she pawned off her valuable ring 25 years ago.

I hope it turns up for you, especially after hearing about the insurance case in the other thread just started.

Any luck finding the ring? My ering seemed to "disappear" one night, I ended up tearing the house apart and found it between the mattress and bed rail, sitting on a slat........couldn''t have dropped it and had it land there if I tried but somehow in the night I knocked it off.......
