Hello,

I recently educated myself on diamonds and I found a store close to my work (recommended by a co-worker) while searching for an engagement ring for my future wife. Anyway, it just happened I came across a stone that really caught my attention. Here are the details of the stone below.

I was quoted a price of approx 18k for this diamond. I put a small deposit on it to lock it in but I can still back out the deal. I was hoping if some kind people would advise me if this is a good price and if this stone is worth buying. After all its not a small purchase and I really want to buy the best I can for this price range :). Thanks so much in advance.

I can''t give you advice about this particular stone, but I would recommend using the pricing tool to compare the prices of similar stones. If you click on "Prices" you''ll see several different search options.

It''s a good stone at a fair price. It gets a 2 on the HCA, worth buying if the price is right. The depth is a little greater than ideal, which usually results in the diameter being a little smaller than a stone with less depth. There are better cut stones within GIA excellent, but I''d consider this one if you have seen it and think it looks great.

The price seems about right for a F VS2. It''s got a GIA certificate, right?

Any chance you''d consider dropping your color? You could save some money without seeing any color if you''d consider a G or H. You could save even more by looking at some SI''s. You''re in a great position in that you can see them in person to make sure you are getting an eye clean SI. OR, you could go bigger instead of saving money

Thanks for all your feedback it is much appreciated.

It definitely has a GIA cert, I pulled those stats off the Gia cert from this stone.

The one blemish is that it has a small cloud on the top that I forgot to mention.

Aside that GIA did not list any other comments and for the most part I was not able to see anything wrong using the loupe, however my eyes are far from experienced.

You have a VERY nice budget and that stone sounds like it has some potential. If I had that kind of $ for a stone I would personally go for something like this:

or, better yet (to ME personally) BIGGER:

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-68015.htm

And depending on where you live, you very well may save the sales tax going with an online vendor (and don''t forget about the upgrade policy that many online vendors offer

). Just food for thought..........I recently purchased a J SI2 from Whiteflash, a 1.59ct round brillant. I am AMAZED and THRILLED with this stone, I never knew I could be satisfied with a J but I am SOLD on the H-I-J range of color and the SI1-SI2 clarity with a VERY VERY VERY WELL CUT DIAMOND (as you would certainly be getting with an ACA) for the value and SIZE they present. Just my 2 cents.

I understand that not everyone is happy with these color/clarity ranges, but there are plenty of us out there who are believers.

What type of setting are you considering?

Wow, thanks so much Jenn, those are definitely worth considering. I haven''t viewed anything in those ranges but I will take a look tomorrow.

As far as setting I believe I may just go with the traditional Tiffany 4 prong setting just to accentuate the diamond only. Worse case I feel I can always go back to the store and change the setting to something else. As for sales tax, I am from the Big Apple but I was able to work out a deal to save myself that tax which is ~1600$!!.

the one thing that bothers me is the depth.............

What would be an ideal depth for a really well cut RB?

spaceworm: the ideal depth is not set in stone.

Hey Julien,

Does the fact that the depth is slightly deeper than "ideal" hurt performance of this stone ?

Would need an Ideal Scope to double check.
