she checked the other stones and replaced the missing ones, and said if it happens again then i can pick out a new setting.

it happen again today, and im sooo upset she said to come in after new years and decide on a new setting.

I am aplogizing for the entire trade. Lost stones are a menace, but this happens so much that something needs to be said.

There is no excuse for lost stones. Period.

If every company who sold jewellery had a warantee which suggested that lost stones are an abnormaility, and this would be treated with an embarrased response, this might be a more perfect world. It''s not rocket science, it''s just thorough customer service. Frankly, lost stones are embarrasing, and reflect negatively on the entrire trade. To suggest that lost stones are a normal part of owning jewellery is comparible to suggesting that owning a car is likely to result in brake failure.

Awwww, so sorry, I know what a drag that is.

Unfortunately, I think that is a very common problem with pave, and the more stones, the higher the probability that one or more will fall out. Some of those micro-pave diamond-encrusted looks (while gorgeous) really do just seem like accidents waiting to happen. While it seems to me that some (*higher quality*) pave definitely holds up better than others, I think no pave is immune to lost stones. It's just the nature of the beast.

Whether it's worth it to you or not (to replace stones now and then) is a decision that only you can make.

ETA: Apparently The Doctor and I were typing at the same time. Believe me, I LOVE what he is saying... and I *want to believe*!!!

I would LOVE to feel free to put my ring in the ultrasonic cleaner every day... but I'm afraid to. And my friend, who just got a killer Michael B pave setting was told by Michael B himself NOT to use the US, either. Like I said, I LOVE what The Doctor has written, and believe me, I would LOVE to own one of his designs and have that wonderful confidence... but for now, I'd still have to say that my own personal and first-hand experience (as a consumer) is what I wrote above. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!)

Brew a cup of tea, put your feet up, and browse through the Engagement Ring/Eye Candy folder in the Show Me The Ring forum. You''ll get a kijillion wonderful ideas there!!!

well, I agree with The Doctor that when pave is done correctly, it should not fall out. however, I also believe that pave must be treated much more carefully than a plain ring. One bang can loosen a bead and out pops the stone. the mix of metal can also be a contributer. I don''t know who made your ring but there are certain designers who have reputations for high quality settings that don''t have many problems with lost stones, there are others that have seemingly ongoing issues. whether or not a ring was handmade or cast can also come into play. pave is very, very popular right now and the quality will range for poor to excellent. I do think loosing as many stones as you have does call for a different setting, especially since it''s bothering you to have to replace lost stones so often. maybe try a one-side pave setting from a desinger like Ritani, who has a great reputation for durable pave.

I have the exact same problem with my halo pave ring. I must have replaced stones 5-6 times by now and sadly I find myself hardly ever wearing it anymore because of this. It is such a bummer!!!

I have two pave rings...one a diamond and the other a ruby. I never sleep with either of them on, don''t use the ultrasonic cleaner and never wear them in any situations which might be stressful to the pave (any kind of work with the hands). I absolutely love the look of pave, but it is really not a style for everyday wear. I have only lost one tiny diamond once, but that was enough to tell me to proceed with caution. I would really think twice about an engagement or wedding ring with pave.
My engagement ring has many small prong set diamonds and I abuse that one like heck and have never had a problem with it. Invisible set stones are also problematic. When choosing a style, you must consider wearability. Just my humble opinion:)

i am sooo careful with my ring!!! i wear it with caution, and it still happen which just tells me the pave isn''t for me!!

perhaps if you get a different kind of pave - two sided or just one row - something maybe that's more secure. I'm so sorry this has happened to you, it is awful. Good luck finding something else that will make you happy.

ETA - I have a halo micro-pave ering and I have had it for six months - I try to be careful with it, but accidents do happen and I'm rough on my hands. My ring was also bought online and isn't a designer name. I have never had a stone fall out so far (knock on wood!). I wouldn't really say that ALL pave is a bad idea, and that you should give up on the look that you love.

I am so sorry to hear the problems you are having bella.
I LOVE pave and am looking at getting a 3 sided pave ring. I am not a careful/delicate person and I am quite scared that this may be a horrible choice for me. BUT, I just love the look!

Keep us posted on what you decide.

BTW - Your ring is BEAUTIFUL! I''d find it hard to part with it!

BELLA9280,

I am so very sorry, your current setting is amazing.

It is great that your jeweller is taking responsibility, but it seems in the real world that some diamond settings are not so practical. It is such a pity. I changed a ring setting for the same reason but miss the extra sparkle.

Sorry to be of no help really, i''m just chiming in to let you know, I feel for you...

Where did the stones fall from? Was it the same place the second time?

How about a shared prong eternity type setting. super blingy and diamonds are more securely set.

I know someone who does repair work for the mall stores and people who come in for repairs. When I was looking for a new setting I loved all the pave-set rings especially the "non-metal" look. He said those styles are really popular right now but that he is always doing repair work on them. He didn''t discourage me completely from pave but said it is important to have metal around the diamonds. So I have a one sided pave shank and a halo with metal around the rim. It is more metal than I was originallly looking at but I don''t worry about my ring and it still looks delicate enough for me. From someone who stopped wearing her original engagement ring because of impractical design, it is sad to love something you can''t wear and enjoy.

Good luck and just keep searching until you find a setting you love just as much or more.

thanks everyone!! im going to wait till jan and start the search for the "right setting" the stones that fell out were all on the backside of the band. you cannot even tell but i know so it bothers me.

my setting was 1000 and im soo upset since i opted for the smaller stone, and the larger setting!! ive been thinking ideally i would like to have my current setting made in white gold, and exchange my stone for the larger one. im not sure if she will allow me to do this but i did buy both the stone and setting from her.

then i will get a diamond wedding band, but i just have to wait and see

ugh my heart aches!!
