Thanks in advance, Ann

I ran the numbers on the HCA, and it returned a 6.4, which is Fair.

Light Return Good
Fire Poor
Scintillation Poor
Spread
or diameter for weight Excellent

But, the important question is - do you love the diamond? Will the numbers really change your mind about how you feel when you wear it?

So, does this mean this was a bad pick? What does fair mean?

Thanks for your help.

It''s cut very shallow for the size of the table. Just remember you aren''t wearing paper, you''re wearing a diamond...so if it looks good to you, and you''re happy, don''t get hung up on labels

If you aren''t wild about, and there''s a return period then I''m sure we could help you find a better cut.

An HCA of 2 or under is considered ideal around here for sparkle/brilliance/fire/etc.

Thank you all for your feedback. Do you think I can exchange it since I haven''t taken it home since they are mounting it in my setting? I must say from the knowledge I''ve learned from this forum I am becoming more and more anal. Knowledge can be dangerous. Do you think if I focus on ideal cuts that I will be safe?

Your feedback is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Who is the vendor he bought it from?

You should be able to, if the jeweler (I'm assuming they are local?) cares at all about your satisfaction. Just nicely tell them you've done some research and have decided you would like a better cut diamond. If they tell you that one is nice, just say you'd still like something different.

As someone pointed out, all GIA EX cuts are not created equal. Since they round their crown and pavilion numbers, use this cheat sheet as a guide if you decide to look further.

"With that said, here's a "Cliff's Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35)"

Also look at AGS0 stones if the jeweler carries them. While they are not all created equal either, they are a safer bet than the majority of stones out there. And you could always run a potential through the HCA. Just take your time, and when you've found a couple you like, do a visual comparison. Look at them in as many lighting situations as possible. And cup your hand over them to cut off the light source and see which one still seems a bit lively. A well cut diamond will not go totally flat/dull in this situation.

HTH

p.s. You do get what you pay for (and you pay for a great cut), so if you go with a better cut, you might not be able to hit that 2 ct. mark without either going down in color and/or clarity (if you have a certain budget), or size. But most on here will tell you they'd rather have a well cut smaller stone, than a so so cut larger.

Ditto Ellen''s advice.

My jeweler is going to find me an AGS ideal cut diamond (2.03). I was disappointed with my HCA 6.4 rating. So, should I assume that with an AGS ideal cut that my HCA rating will be better?

I think that is a relatively safe assumption.

Yes, if you get an AGS-0 the HCA score will be a lot better. Also, tray to get an ex-ex-ex AGS-0, if at all possible...

You want to get an AGS-O with Ideal or O for each catergory, not excellent, as this is a lower grading with AGS.

Well, my jeweler has got 2 stones in and says they are ideal - AGS. I will see them tomorrow. Wish me luck. My husband is tired of me sharing all of my new learned info on finding the best cut diamond that he can afford. Whew, I''ve learned a lot from you guys. I will have an update tomorrow.

Enjoy tomorrow and fill us in . . . I know many of us here would just love the opportunity to sit down with two ideal cut diamonds and decide which one to bring home . . . sigh!

I had 2 ideal diamonds to choose from 2.023 and a 2.126. Below are it''s characteristics. What do you think?

"Cut Grade: AGS Ideal 0 "
should be lovely

This 2.12 looks very good, no red flags!!

Wow, I am SO glad you found pricescope before you were stuck with that other stone!!! Is the other AGS stone an H SI1 as well? I''d take a look at both very closely and with a loupe to see which one has less significant inclusions if it was me, assuming the cuts are equal. Some SI1''s are cleaner than others.

Actually, I looked at both and the 2.126 was the better choice because the 2.023 had more visible inclusions when I used the 16x loupe.

Thank you all for you guidance...it was truly appreciated.
