Soooo, my mom and her friends walk around their neighborhood every day to exercise (and gossip, I''m sure). The other day they noticed a large, empty garbage bin in front of one of the older houses. The last few days they have slowly noticed things being put in the garbage bin. One of my mom''s friends found out that a elderly lady had passed away and her children were cleaning out her house. Instead of having an estate sale, they were just throwing out the old stuff that they didn''t want.

My mom is a huge antique-fiend, so she hopped in the dumpster (crazy woman) and grabbed a bunch of old things she thought might be of some worth. Among these things were old postage stamp collections, fabrics, books, old lunch boxes with cartoons on them, a chrome Lincoln bread ("beauty") box, an old medical dictionary, and about 50 old magazines from the 50''s-70''s. Magazines include vintage Sports Illustrated, Louisiana Heritage, Evergreen, Lovely Louisiana, McCall''s Home Decorating, and a TON of old Playboy and Esquire magazines (no Marilyn Monroe.. I asked!). She does have one Playboy with Jane Mansfield in it, although I shudder a little when I think about my mom flipping through a Playboy to figure out that Jane Mansfield was in it.

Anyway, Mom''s birthday is this weekend so I''m headed home for a visit. She offered to give me any and all of these things to sell or keep. Goodness knows I already have enough stuff lying around my house. My question is, what would be the best place to sell these things? Ebay? A pawn store has already offered to buy, but I know they will try to lowball us. I might end up having to go in that direction though, if I find out that they aren''t worth anything on ebay.

What do you guys think?

Wow, those are some great finds! How nice that your mom was observant and someone else will be able to appreciate these items. I''m imagining your mom dumpster diving and it''s cracking me up.

For things that you are not interested in keeping, you may want to research the market first to see how much the items are worth. For example, this site shows shows information regarding Sports Illustrated since the 50''s. Also, as my FI says, there''s a forum for everything. The forum sites are great sources of information. Then you can decide whether you want to sell them on ebay; sell or give away through Craig''s List, or word of mouth; or contact a collector. That''s really neat!

I''d try CL before ebay. I know many antique dealers who regularly patrol CL looking for stuff...
