I purchased a .83 carrot lose stone for $3588 Color J Cut Very good (faceted 3.5%) Clarity Vs2 -- No fluorescent, Slightly thick-thick, no culet, polish excellent feather inclusions. It wasn't GIA certified

SO he added a replacement for me that was certified here is the report number 2146393385

The carrot was moved up to .90 Color J Cut Very good - Polish Excellent No fluorescent, etc

Am I getting a good deal here? Should I renegotiate for a better COLOR and Cut diamond and go down in Clarity( note I could see the imperfections of the S2 when held up against my hand looking closely they said I had a good eye)

This is a engagement ring for my girlfriend of 8 years. I want to get the best for my budget. I picked out the band at this store (I loved it the most diamonds see through on all sides channeled so I wanted to buy the diamond here but I am having doubts) Just to clarify I can buy the ban and get the stone elsewhere)

I don't know why I am saying stone instead of diamond.

Crown angle is large which is why it is not an ideal cut stone. I will look and see what I can find under $3600. brb

The band will go up in price if I don't buy the Diamond from the jeweler. SO price I am looking for would be 3200 to stay in budget.

Yeah. That's not a very well cut diamond. That's the biggest problem with it. It is over deep and the crown is too high for good performance.

Cut is king. http://www.gia.edu/cs/Satellite?reportno=2146393385&childpagename=GIA%2FPage%2FReportCheck&pagename=GIA%2FDispatcher&c=Page&cid=1355954554547

https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/diamond-cut Please read here. A poorly cut stone will look smaller and darker than a well cut stone. And it is a big difference.

We can do better than that for you.

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.90-carat-j-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-283809 I'd put this one on hold now. It's clean, it's big and it's very well cut. There is no cost to put a diamond on hold with James Allen. Ask them for an Idealscope image as well (also free).

Here's what the idealscope image does: https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/firescope-idealscope It evaluates light performance. That one should have a great idealscope.

I see no issue with the J color AS LONG AS the light performance and cut of the diamond are excellent. If they are not, the diamond will not perform and the light return will not mask body color (important with a J color stone). And I think the VS clarity as long as it is clean is just fine.

What does the setting look like and what is the price you are being quote for it? I bet we can find you something comparable at a lower price.

The setting is very unique and I am Also able to finance with my jeweler in 12 month payments...big factor.

Total price with tax 5900
Ban- Channeled princess cut Color G S1 visible 3d of ring. (you can see diamonds from all 3 sides of ring) Its awesome.
Without the tax its roughly 3500 for the stone and 1800 for the ban.

I Picked it out.... is there something wrong with it?

It's a very large wide setting and that style generally needs a lot of diamond to balance it out. It can make a more sensibly sized stone look small as a result. Plus that particular setting is quite masculine. And a bit dated.

Depending on what you lady likes I'd say it's a pretty risky choice.

Did she give you any guidance on what types of settings she likes? Has she shown you any rings?

Well, it's pretty but it's a very specific style that might not be to everyone's tastes.

It's usually better to ask her what she likes first, or propose with a classic solitaire because those are safer, inexpensive, and almost any lady would like one.

It looks better with a round diamond not the square princess cut.

I got her a ring before and she loves it. Classic 1 stone.

When I asked her about what ring she wants she said she wanted diamonds to be everywhere.

I had a 2nd pick it loked like this--http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/3-stone-rings-anyone#axzz2sPg5dxhC

Also, that price is not good, especially for just 'very good' cut.

1. Carat, not carrot
2. I fail to see how your jeweller "messed up" unless you originally specified GIA
3. Ditto Gypsy, and put the stone she suggested on hold before a lurker snatches it up
4. PLEASE get her explicit opinion on your setting choice. Just because you chose well before doesn't mean this is a good choice now - it is, as Gypsy said, a very masculine, bold style that many women will feel strongly about one way or another. Not really a style I'd recommend surprising someone with. Take a look at some of JA's settings to see examples of other styles to consider
5. PLEASE consider financing very, very carefully. You'll probably have a number of other big expenses coming up soon after the engagement - wedding, possibly moving/buying a house/children... just make sure that you're completely comfortable with the thought of being indebted for the ring for a full year.

Currently when someone says diamonds everywhere they mean more like one of these:

http://shopping.schubachstore.com/Style-102032-Round-Halo-Engagement-Ring-With-Milgraining-And-Round-Diamond-Side-Stones

Skinny bands, pave, and halos are what's "in" and that's most likely what your girlfriend means. Channel set is more 80s/90s - everyone I know who has more recently gotten a channel set band, especially with round stones, is a nurse or doctor who has to wear gloves a lot and wants something that won't snag on the glove.

Now, it is POSSIBLE that your girlfriend meant something like the one you linked to. But it's not very probable.

I would get this setting:

http://www.elizabetajewelry.com/products/beverley-k-diamond-engagement-ring-semi-mount-center-stone-not-included-number-9412-slash-60 It will make your center stone look huge. It is great quality. And we have PS vendors that can price match that price for you.

Or this one:
http://www.elizabetajewelry.com/products/beverley-k-diamond-engagement-ring-semi-mount-center-stone-not-included-number-1229-slash-52

And that JA stone.

You would just get the setting from another vendor (Pearlmans can order Beverly K for you and match that price) and have them send it to James Allen to set your diamond in it.

So I did some researching.....and looked on her Pinterest account

Found a few rings....nothing looked like the one I picked out lol. Thanks you probably saved me here. I will go back and pick out something a little different.

Her taste r Classic and Vintage 1 rock in the center with a few diamonds along sides.

:wink2: Aren't you a great researcher!

I'm so glad you did some sleuthing.

What you describe is right in line with Beverly K's whole line and much of Gabriel's Victorian Line.

http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/ER10276W44JJ Beautiful and VERY budget friendly. Which leave you with MUCH less to finance!!!!

IDJewelry can get you those settings 20% off and have them sent to James Allen to match with that stone I posted for you earlier.

Any chance you can repost those ring pictures here so we can have a better idea?

SO I went back to FAO jewelers and decided to go with the Tiffany style solitude ring.

for both rings-- (included mount and everything replacement for life ie) I WONT DO ONLINE SITES!!!! has to be in store only.

I narrowed it down to 2 Diamonds to fit into it.
For $5550

GIA- 6157090181 .92 , I color, VS1, and very good cut
Polish Ex, Sym, excellent, fluoro -none
Crystal cloud, pinpoint

OR

GIA 1127590550 $5400

.80, Color E, vs2 cut very good
polish very good, sym- very good fluoro-none
feather,crystal, cloud

MY thoughts- size vs color and clarity .8- .92 its a solitude ring!
Help me decide.

Neither.

VG cut is not good enough. I don't know how to say it any other way.

You need a better stone. You aren't getting any discount for the VG cut. The prices aren't worth what you are getting.

This jeweler isn't really giving you your money's worth.
