My green finger! What to do?!

Not sure if this is the right topic for this but..

I am so horrified! I''ve had my e-ring a little over the month. I don''t usually wear it too much...I take it off as soon as I get home, don''t wear it to bed and not in the shower. It is 14kt white gold. I guess lately I''ve worn it alot more than usual with the holidays and for the past 3 days my finger has been turning green in the evenings!

We''re in the process of getting a new setting within a few months so is there anything I can do to make it not turn green?

Also I''ve heard that platinum is the most hypoallergenic so when I get the new setting made is there a certain alloy that I should ask for?

Yikes! I have never heard of a WG ring making fingers green...

I hate to say this but are you sure it is WG?
To the experts what would cause that?

I heard once that metals can turn your finger green if you don''t eat enough of something??? Maybe it''s iron? I''m not positive at all though, can''t find anything about it online. Just throwing it out there.

It''s stamped 14kt on the inside but my grandmother''s old gold rings turn my fingers green in a hurry (30 mins or less).

I have heard that you can paint the inside of the ring with clear nail polish. Sorry I dont know if it work or not and I am not shure if it can damage the gold trying to get it off latter. So sorry

Its not turning yellow at all its still very shiny...I have no clue

I''m pretty allergic to earrings not made out of sterling silver but even with those I have to take them out after I get home or else my ears get infected too...gah I hate this

Gold doesn''t do that, the alloy metals do. I do not know which particular mix does it, but the higher the gold content the lesser the problem. And it surely isn''t the Palladium mix. The green oxide could come from copper (old reddish gold has allot, but the white? not sure) or chromium ? Just guessing because these two have green oxides.

Never heard of this about any of the Platinum alloys. Besides, there the precious metal content is very much higher.

I would try the clear nailpolish trick. You can get it off with nailpolish remover. (Your ring is just gold and diamond(s), right? No delicate colored stones like opals or emeralds or something?)

Many people who can''t wear gold find platinum works for them. What''s the new setting going to be made of?

My new setting will be platinum as I love the whole halo/micropave look so I''m really glad no one has had a problem with plat *whew*

I''m going to try the clear nailpolish trick it does sound like a good idea I''m going to check with the jeweler first though just in case

I wonder if he''d take it back hehe in my dreams maybe.

I have to ask the same question that was asked earlier if it is really 14 K WG or is it gold plated maybe??? I know that some of my costume jewelry that is gold plated turns my finger green. As far as hypoallergenic choices if you are sensitive...try titanium. I am not really sure there are titanium settings and wedding bands out there for women (I have seen wedding bands for men in titanium) but I do know that this is pretty much nickel free and that is usually what causes allergic reactions to metals. I have an allergy to nickel, but only if it is in my earring posts, not from jewelry that I wear on the outside like on a finger or wrist, etc. Just a thought...

Princessv, the same thing happened to a past coworker of mine. Her finger turned green, but she had a yellow gold ring. That''s too bad but I''m glad you can use this opportunity to get the halo setting you want. Will your jeweler give you a credit towards your new setting? I want to see your current setting. Do you have a thread on it? Can you attach a link?

I''m sure it is the alloy used with the white gold. If I drink a lot of orange juice, my fingers turn black under my rings.

I don''t think you will have the problem once you get your new setting in platinum.

I called the jeweler and it is 14kt white gold although he did say it was weird that I have an allergy to white gold (he''d never heard of that just yellow gold)...I''ll have to call back and see if he can do anything about returning it! Diamondlil I''m pretty sure its the alloy too I''m so crazy allergic to some things like perfume, perfumed body lotions, all soaps except 2 brands and different laundry detergents...I''ve just never had a problem with my costume jewelry but I never really did wear rings just earrings and bracelets and necklaces. Tomswife: My earrings all have to be sterling silver (I don''t really wear gold at all). I guess with bracelets and things like that its not that big of a deal...who knows?

I''ve heard, and experienced myself, that real gold can turn fingers green due to a reaction of the metal and a "high acid content" in the wearer''s body. Mine has only done it a very few times (with 14K yellow gold) so I chalked it up to having "too much acid" in my body on those few occassions. Don''t know if this info is true, but it seems reasonable considering mine has only done it a few times, so it must be something "chemical" with myself! At any rate, hope you find something that works for you.

Thanks for the response Mellowcat! I''ve been noticing that this has a little to do with it for example today I had three lemon wedges in water at lunch (my finger turned green within an hour) and two lemon wedges at dinner (still green/black).

But then the other days that it has turned green has been pretty late at night where I think about all the things I''ve consumed and nothing really comes to mind as acidic

Um..my finger turning green can''t ever turn into a permanent stain right?? Sorry if its a dumb question...no one I know has really experienced this before

On the other hand...my appointment for my new setting is Jan. 14th

I''ve only experience it with cheaper rings that I bought when I was little that weren''t even silver. That sucks that it is happening with your e-ring!! And no, it is not permanent, so don''t worry
