Let me start by saying, I love LGDs. They've allowed me to purchase and create dream pieces much earlier than I could have ever imagined.

After recently purchasing a moissanite solitaire/travel ring that I've been thoroughly enjoying, I had the itch to recreate it in a lab grown diamond. Upon browsing various retailer websites, I stumbled upon this stone and was so drawn to it.

I'm an old cut lover at heart and although I didn't originally plan on purchasing a MRB, something about the larger facets of this stone just spoke to me and I decided to purchase it on a whim. Worst case scenario, I could always return it. Well it just came in and I'm completely enamored.

I never imagined I would enjoy an MRB so much (love seeing them on others, was just never struck by one when on my finger). I'm pretty sure I'm going to keep it, although I can be fickle so we shall see.

Curious what you all think about this stone? If I did keep it, it would be set in simple two-tone six prong solitaire.

On a different note, did any of you unexpectedly stumble upon a piece that you just had to have? Did it live up to your expectations? i would love to see.

I LOVE IT! I adore chunky arrows. I never would have considered it based on the cert numbers since the crown is steep and pav is shallow, but they are complimentary and the end result is super appealing to my eye!

It looks lovely and such a great size on you! I'd just make sure you like its performance and appearance (not overly dark under the table, for example) in all your usual lighting environments.

Love how it looks with the table/depth. Good for you for finding something you like. Agree that LGD let us experiment with limited funds.

I see so many cool developments coming down the line, based on what look like “prototypes” or experiments on Etsy. Gorgeous magenta colors, neon yellow, diamonds with color zoning, exotic cuts, clouds to go for an opalescent look. So I see a lot of things that just a few years ago I would have bought on impulse but now am waiting for further developments.

Both appear to be free of internal graining. Good choices

OMG it’s absolutely beautiful!!! I did the same thing as you… I bought a 3 carat MRB king of on a whim because I was planning on re-cutting it into a transitional. I normally dislike MRBs. But it came and I was kind of smitten with it! In the end I did have it re-cut but occasionally I see the pictures of it in my camera roll and I think “oh it was so pretty!”

Yours is lovely and I agree I love lab grown, I am addicted! I don’t find value in diamonds, I don’t think of them as being “worth” $25,000, they’re not worth it *to me* so I don’t want to buy it for $25,000 but I’m OK buying for $5000.

Definitely take Kim’s advice and make sure you love it in your normal lighting conditions, but it sure looks beautiful in these pictures!!

My yes are always drawn to the steep crown/low pavilion angle with fat arrows style diamonds as well. I know they aren't in the "ideal" category, but if my eyes enjoy them then, well, good enough for me!

Let us know if you decide to keep and set it!

Whoever told you those combos are not 'ideal' it was not me and HCA!

Thank you all for your kind and thoughtful comments! ☺️

Yes! The chunky arrows are what drew me to the stone in the first place. Agree, I knew the "numbers" weren't completely perfect for MRB but the video was so stricking, I thought I'd chance it. Glad I did!

Thank you! I actually ordered two inexpensive CZ rings - one at 8.5mm and one at 9mm. I felt the 9mm was too large and with the 8.5mm, I felt I could go slightly bigger so I determined in-between was my sweet spot. Thanks also for this advice. I'll be sure to wear it round for a while in different environments, as you mentioned, to make sure I like it.

Thank you! Yes, I can totally see what you mentioned coming down the pipeline. That's actually the only reason I have a small hesitation to not keep. I do love it but a small part of me is wondering if I should wait it out a bit and see if something else I fancy comes up since I didn't originally plan on this.

Thank you! So appreciate your feedback ☺️

Thank you! I did see your post about your BEAUTIFUL recut and am so looking forward to seeing it in its final home!! Agree, MRB, are not my normal cup of tea but I've learned, through this, that I do like ones with fat, chunky, arrows. I looked at your previous post and saw the one you purchased. It was beautiful! I'd typically pick a transitional over a MRB so I see why you moved forward with the recut!
I'm in the same camp as you regarding, LGD. At this point, would much rather purchase lab over natural so I can purchase, wear and enjoy pieces much earlier. There are some natural diamonds that stop me in my tracks though (particularly old cuts that Labs have yet to recreate) so they are not completely out , hah!

Yes! I learned through this that I like these types of MRB diamonds as well. Agree, I wasn't really looking for perfect proportions here - just confirmed it fell below 2 in the HCA tool and went with what my eye was drawn too. Glad I did, because you like what you like and as you mentioned, as long as I enjoy it, that's enough!

Will do! As @Kim N and @Inked mentioned, I'll wear it around for a bit to make sure i like it in all environments before making the final call but at this point, I'm leaning towards keeping

Whoever told you those combos are not 'ideal' it was not me and HCA!

It definitely isn't you Garry (or the HCA)!

More accurately, what I meant to say was that my eyes are drawn to diamonds that often fall outside branded super-ideal vendor specifications (which, I now realize I've improperly internalized as the "accepted" standards for "ideal", but they are not, those are just THEIR standards for what they consider "ideal" enough for their branded "super ideal" diamonds. There are so many flavors after all!).

@JV36912 , do feel free to share more photos as you explore all those lighting environments! It's a treat to see IRL pictures of a diamond most people probably would have steered away from.

It looks like you made a wonderful choice! It is what your eyes see that matters the most! It is beautiful and can't wait to see how you set it!!

Thank you! You're so right. Jewelery is meant to be worn and enjoyed and as others have mentioned, there are so many options and preferences. I am loving it so far and will be sure to share an update if I do set it ☺️

I'll definitely try to take and share more pictures in various lightings!

UPDATE: After lots and lots of deliberation, I reluctantly decided to return the diamond.
I reached this decision considering a few things:
1. Thanks to the sound advice of @Kimn and @Inked, I wore this diamond around for a few days to make sure I liked it in every lighting and found that I didn't like it in sunlight. I don't know how to describe what I saw nor could I capture a good photo of it, but it lost it's "crispness" so to speak. Perhaps this is normal or maybe I'm just too used to the performance of OECs but I was underwhelmed by it. All other lightings it was stunning.
2. DSS! When I first received the stone, I thought it was the perfect size. After wearing it around for a few days, I got used to the size and started to wonder if perhaps I should save up a bit and go larger. I couldn't commit having this feeling and thought it would be best to wait till I was sure.
3. It wasn't an old cut. Although I was surprised at how much I loved this MRB, at the end of the day it wasn't the OEC or OMC that I was originally wanting. I know myself and knew that if I kept this stone, that itch for an old cut solitaire wouldn't go away and I would still long for it.

Although I feel a sadness letting it go, I feel confident I'm making the right decision. I also have another project in the works that will distract me from my sadness, ha. Thanks so much to everyone who viewed and chimed in- sharing their thoughts and opinions on this beautiful stone. What a great, kind, community we have here!

Awww! Im sorry it didnt work out. I know how you must feel, I was sad to see the MRB leave to be recut because i liked it! Just, like you, I knew I wouldnt love it long term because I truly madly deeply love old cuts.

Maybe you can do the same, pick a MRB that is a bit bigger than you actually want and have it re-cut. It still would be cheaper than buying a lab OEC directly from the prices of any lab OECs i have seen.... and l feel more ownership over it because I picked my facet pattern and chose to send to GIA over IGI, and was just more involved in it all.

Soooo... maybe thats an option for you?? Buy a kick-a$$ MRB that bigger than you really want, and you can keep it for a bit before you send off to have it recut.

You read my mind! I've started to consider this and, after seeing yours and others recut, I'm thinking it might be my best bet. Will update if I decide to go that route!
