i am not too sure on the stats
i know its a 8 carat radiant cut diamond

since we are shopping for rings and i am loving emeralds and radiants at the moment, she let me wear it for a few seconds before snatching it back!!!! so i quickly took some quicks shots of the ring....

PS. I CANNOT TAKE GOOD PICS! THE RING APPEARS CLOUDY, BUT IN REALITY ITS AMAZING!

guys, my pics wont uploaaddd

Keep trying~!

Probably because the pics are too big.

Try to reduce the size. What you do is right click, Edit it, reduce it to about 15-25% of the original, save it and try to upload again.

Would love to see a pic(s) of this boulder!

You can email Admin and ask them to post pics for you.

Sorry, it''s not the pic''s file size.
It''s the diamond.

Diamonds over 5 carats overload the server.

i wish i can show you the setting... i have never seen anything like it. its basically holds the diamond in like a ''box'' so only two prongs are visible.....

annoying pictures!

my man''s mother is one lucky woman!!!!!

Yap, amazing...

Other pics, try just renaming them with random names and numbers, that should work if the size is below 100k.

seriously HUGE.... do you know of the specs? beside it''s 8 carat?

I would love to know more about the diamond. I know that it is not the best picture of the ring, so you can''t really tell how amazing it is. If it is a real diamond, then she must have one nice husband!

It looks like white topaz to me or some other gemstone.

I also ask if you are sure that is a diamond? If so I would be most concerned about the exposed corners of the stone as they could chip which also makes me wonder if it is in fact a diamond seeing not only how it looks but how it is set.

Do you have any more photos? Maybe ones taken with a bit of light coming through from behind, with the ring resting on light surfaces? It does look cloudy in that photo, but maybe if you get it in the light, the sparkles you see in person will show up in pictures? Also, this may not be possible since it''s not your ring, but if it hasn''t been cleaned in a long time, that could have something to do with how it appears in photographs as well. Hope to see many more photos soon!

Do you think the "box" setting the poster is referring to is a bezel?

I don't think so, looks like the corners aren't protected in anyway, that would worry me for such a big stone as it could really put the stone at risk for chipping. Still I can't get a good view but it looks as if it is just held in place with 2 prongs leaving the corners exposed.

Of course better photos would help, but this doesn't really look like any diamond I'm used to seeing.
What is the cut?
I agree with others, it is likely some type of other gemstone..

It seems so unlikely to me that someone would set an 8 carat diamond like that with 4 corners exposed. This indicates to me that it probably isn`t a diamond. It could be why she snatched it back??? The photo also looks unlike a diamond however if you know it to be a diamond from your own eyes, I guess its possible,

It’s hard to guess without knowing the size of the hand but that actually looks bigger than 8 carats to me. She might be impressed at how much it would change if she cleaned it.

Note to gurus. Stone ID based on fuzzy photographs is a very problematic task. Presumably MIL is happy with it, which is the point after all. Congratulations to her.

Hey Neil,
right you are.
Perhaps, and I''m not saying its an excuse for "raining on anyone''s parade", but there was a thread recently
in SMTR of a mbr showing off her (I think( future SIL''s "huge 3ct diamond" - which, similiar to above was a fuzzy photo and hard to see, but was quite clear it was Not a diamond.
When it was first mentioned to the poster, of course she thought this is a bit odd and was maybe taken aback.

But I understand a couple weeks/months later she came back to advise PS it was, after all, I believe a moissanite - and the SIL had been boasting about the 3ct diamond which she knew to not be true, for personal reasons..

Anyway, long way around, that member ended up having a happy resolution and thanking the PS''er for their honesty..I am just saying, this ring seems similiar to that case is all - and the photo looks quite similiar.
Maybe that is why people are passing on these comments - and I''m sure the motivation is purely the same as in the other thread - for education and help. The last thing we want is future MIL perhaps being taken on this
diamond, correct?

From that photo, alarm bells ring for me.
But hey, you''re the expert

You Rocky Talky regulars are quite the detectives, aren''t you? I shall have to spend more time here. You really make me laugh! I mean if this is the treatment you afford a poster who tries on a family member''s ring, I cannot imagine how you would treat someone trying to pull a scam!

If MIL doesn’t have the sense to get that magnitude of purchase checked out by a pro there’s more wrong with this story than the photograph. I’m going to presume she knows what she has although it’s entirely possible that she’s not forthcoming with that information to a future DIL. That’s definitely not a gemological question. I’m not saying it’s a diamond, I’m saying that we don’t know and that we aren’t in a position to make that call. Maybe I’m just overly careful about this sort of thing because I’m a pro and I’m projecting onto all of you. No offense intended. I agree that the photo doesn’t quite ring right but when diamonds (as well as the fakes) get really dirty on the pavilion side and are reasonably clean on the top they do sort of look like that.

By the way, I agree with the above advice that this doesn’t look like a sensible setting for every day wear to me, precisely because of those exposed corners. Even a rather low grade diamond in that size range would be worth quite a bit of money and the risk in this setting is considerable. In a high grade it would be worth more than my house.

A designer Whitney Boin makes a very similar setting called the post collection with only two prongs on the top and a full bezel "underwire". I have seen this Whitney Boin setting set with a six carat radiant.
