I always enjoy reading about people''s experiences at B&M stores, so I thought I''d relate my experience. It wasn''t a good one. I took in my engagement ring from my ex to trade in on something else. Well, first off the jeweler tells me that the marquise is the worst selling diamond right now. I''m thinking of course he''s going to tell me that to lowball me on the price. Sure enough, after inspecting my diamond ring, he tells me it''s of low quality and he can only offer me $250! This was a $3,000 ring when my ex bought it. I know I would never get close to that, but $250?

The conversation continues to deteriorate. I ask him about his radiant cut diamonds. I have a radiant cut engagement/wedding ring, so I thought I''d get a matching pendant for it. He only sells original radiant cut diamonds, which is fine. If I trade in my marquise ring, he will give me $700 off the price of the radiant. I looked at his radiants, and they were nice, but I have a generic radiant, and I thought mine was just as nice. He of course proceeds to tell me that generic radiants are never as nice as the original radiant cut. The man just never stopped insulting me. So, I looked at 2 of his radiants, one was a 0.99 carat F SI2. It was very nice and white; I also have an F, so it was nice, but he wanted $6,000 for it. I thought that was rather overpriced. He also showed me a 1.22 carat H SI2, and I didn''t like it at all. It looked really yellow next to my F, and in all honesty I thought it was a K or L. (Nothing against K''s or L''s, I just prefer whiter stones.) He was going to sell that for me for $6100. He was really trying to push me into buying the 1.22 telling me it would only be $5400 once I trade in my marquise ring. Even at $5400 it was too much! I''m sure I could get an equal diamond from any pricescope vendor for much less and keep the marquise ring!

After that I was done. My husband continued to chat with the man for a bit, but I had it with him treating me like I was an idiot. So, I will continue to buy my diamonds online and forget going into a store!

How about putting your old marquise into a pendant? I bet it would be beautiful. Marquise cuts may not be the most popular right now but like most fashion trends, they will probably come back into favor some time. Until then you could enjoy it as a pendant, especially since the most the jeweler seems willing to do for you is offer you $700 in trade.

Id keep the diamond and mount it surrounded by some sapphires or rubies in a flower type pendant or pin.

That is actually what I did with my old pear shaped diamond when I upgraded to a larger one. What gave me the idea for it was seeing exactly what Strmdr is describing-- a marquise diamond surrounded by sapphires mounted in 14k carat white gold. I chose blue sapphires because that was my birthstone, but I had also discussed using diamonds or emeralds as well.
