Well, I recently visited Chicago and ended up Jeweler''s row. Since FF wanted to get my finger sized eventually, we decided to stop by a store to get it sized, as well as check out some loose diamonds since neither of us have really seen any IRL. I was more interested to see what colors look like since I think I prefer warmer colors (K or L). The first store did not have any, so we left and walked down the street a bit. We saw the "mall" with the jeweler booths, so I decided to look in there since I''ve heard there is a laid back atmosphere at places like that.
I was expecting to see stones with wacky certifications, but I felt it was a better option than maul jewelers. Boy was I wrong! I stopped at a booth and asked a lady if she had any J, K, or L colors. She said she only had one or two J''s and a champagne stone. I agreed to see a J, even though I was sure it was going to look white (I am not color sensitive). She unwrapped the stone and picked it up with tweezers to show me.
It was YELLOW
You know those M or O stones described as "buttery" and "a ray of sunshine"? Yeah...I was so sad at first because I thought I was indeed color sensitive. I was also surprised to find out that the stone was 1.09 ct and probably faced up more like a .85 or so. Well.. thank goodness it wasn''t certified. I felt better knowing there is still hope for Ks or Ls, but I still stuck around to see what the lady would throw at me next. She took out a 2ct I color and set it next to the 1ct J. It was a night and day difference! The 2ct had no trace of color (to my untrained eyes) but the 1ct SCREAMED yellow. Of course, the other one wasn''t certified either. Playing dumb, I say, "Wow, there really is a difference between one color grade, huh?" and she says, "Oh yeah! You can really see the yellow starting at J...actually, starting at H"
Yeah, I ran out of that place without looking back. So, I''m still at square one and I would love to see some warm colors (or at least some accurate carat sizes!) in person. Does anyone know any places in Chicago that do not require an appointment? I''d like for FF to see that J''s do NOT really look yellow!
Thanks
