Hi Everyone,

First, I just want to say what a godsend this site is. I decided that I wanted to propose to my GF and started doing some diamond research. Along the way I stumbled upon this site and have learned so much....and it''s been so much fun. I think I might actually be sad when I finally buy the diamond as I won''t have a reason to do diamond research anymore.

I''ve had all my worries about purchasing a diamond online erased by visiting these forums and reading all the info on this site, and I will for certain be purchasing my diamond though one of the highly recommended PS vendors.

Here''s what I''m thinking:

In terms of a diamond this is what I''m looking at with a $5000 - $6000 budget. I don''t plan to pop the question until the end of the summer, so I''ve got time to find the perfect stone:

Round Cut
AGS0, H&A
Colour: G or H
Clarity: VS1 - SI1 (only eye-clean SI1s)
HCA score below 2.0
No Flouresence
And basically, as big as I can get within my budget with these general parameters. Once I''ve got some choices, I plan to post the specs and Ideal-Scope/ASET images to get some feedback from the wonderful members of this forum.

Now in terms of the ring, my idea (which I''ve talked to with my GF), is to have two pear shaped emerald side stones in a white gold band. I haven''t seen too many engagement rings with emerald side stones, especially pear shaped ones, so I think it will be fairly unique and different, and really stand out.

I haven''t really quite got down to the specifics of the setting, so I''m looking for any ideas/suggestions.

I''d would like the band to taper in (see the attached picture), and become narrow as it get''s to the stones....good idea? Also, any suggestions as to the size of the emerald side stones that I should get, considering the likely size of diamond I''ll buy with my budged/parameters?

I welcome any and all thoughts and suggestions.....don''t be afraid to be critical, I won''t take offence.

Thanks everyone!

If you want a taper, maybe that will require that the pointy end of the pear face towards the diamond. Just trying to visualize a pear put on top of a tapered shank.

The one thing that isn''t a good idea is the emeralds. They are SUPER soft and won''t stand up to daily wear. That is why no one puts them in engagement rings.

There is a garnet much more beautiful than many emeralds because it isn''t included as badly called Tsavorite. That would hold up much better, be cheaper most likely, and sparkle more. That is what I would go for...

whatmeworry - I was thinking that the tapered end would kind of go nice going into the pointed end of the pear.....so the band tapers in towards the side stones, and then gets bigger as it goes from the pointy end of the pear to the thick end, culminating in the diamond.....but I haven't actually seen what it will look like, and I'm no ring expert, so I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the suggestion.

neatfreak - Thanks for the Tsavorite suggestion! Just did a quick Google search on it, and it definitely looks like the way to go. Brilliant...thanks so much!

No problem! Tsavs are so gorgeous, if you are just looking for green they are a much better way to go IMO. I also think your taper idea makes perfect sense. Go with your gut!

Oh and a great source to help you with this project is Wink Jones @ Winfields. He's a PS vendor AND is a pro at sourcing beautiful colored sidestones for rings.

I''ve actually been in contact with Wink Jones about a diamond, so I''ll also ask about some Tsavs as well......thanks again!

Here are couple of suggestions with emerald/trapz side stones from two really reputable designers: I am sure they can accomodate a round center easily...

Sorry, I was actually looking for an Emerald (the gem), not the type of cut. But thanks for the suggestions!

Nice one, thanks! That gives me an idea of what it will look like, but I''d like the side stones to be much smaller. The ones in that picture are the same size as the diamond.

If I get a diamond around .9 - 1.0cts, I was thinking of side stones around .25 - .33....make sense?

If they were diamond sidestones, yes that makes sense. But remember that gems and diamonds have different densities, so a .25 emerald won''t be the same size as a .25 diamond. Best thing to do is to work with a vendor like Wink and just explain how big you''d like them to be in size relation to the diamond. Then he can source the appropriate size stones.

Hi!

Looks like for around $6000 (a hair under with PS discount), you can get an H SI1 ACA (need to check each stone for eyecleanliness)

Here is one just as a guide

For another 500ish dollars, you can go to G colour, just over 1ct. My suggestion would be to find something just under the 1ct mark, go to the G colour maybe?

Good luck, the ring sounds beautiful and unique too, she will love it!

Good to know, so I guess what I mean, is that I''d like the Tsavs to be the size of a .25 - .33 ct diamond......thanks again!

Thanks! I''m really hoping to do the whole ring (diamond, side stones, setting, taxes, shipping) for $7000. I''m not sure sure how much I can expect to spend on the Tsavs and setting (if anyone has any idea, I''d appreciate it), but I figure it''ll be at least $1000....so $6000+tax for the ring might be fairly tight.

Nice thing is that I''ve got plenty of time to wait for the right diamond at the right price...

I ran across Sarahthewarrior''s thread yesterday. Thought you might like to look at pics of her ring, which is a round center with 2 tsavorites. Lots of pics. It''s not the same style as what you want, but there''s a lot of info on how the ring came into being. Check it out: here.

That''s awesome, thanks lyra! That ring is beautiful! I love the tsav/diamond combo.....I''m so glad it was suggested for me instead of Emeralds....it''s a much nicer gem.

I think you are totally on the right track when it comes to the center stone and you are doing your homework. I''m also really glad to see that you talked with your gf about the setting, that is so awesome that you are thinking about what she would love! I think the setting is also going to be gorgeous and definitely stand out with pear green sidestones.

However, I think NF is right that you might want to consider tsavorite garnets instead of emeralds. They are harder and will stand up to wear better than emeralds. It might be a little hard to find nicely matched and well-cut pear tsavorites, so you might want to consider getting them custom cut or having the vendor you work with source them out for you. If you can''t find pears, round tsavorites would also be awesome!

For now, I would focus on finding a great center stone.

Don''t worry about not having an excuse to do diamond research later on....you can always buy your gf anniversary presents down the road LOL!!!
