I had to put my colored diamond on hold, as once we moved, I found out I no longer have a job....but I think things were still in line for me, as the same seller had an antique setting...I have been debating resetting my omc in an antique setting so it ended up being prefect! If the setting originally had a 6mm stone, and mine is a 5mm stone, will resetting it be difficult?

I absolutely love that setting, but I am not sure about putting a 5mm stone in it if it was meant for 6mm. I'd ask the jeweler to find a 5mm diamond or cz and prop it in there to see how it looks before deciding.

the setting is already en route to me....I wasnt entirely sure of how the process works to reset a diamond, so I was hoping the mm difference was an easy fix.

I am quite sure it is possible, but it just may not look as good as it would with the right size stone. if they have a return policy, then get a 5mm cz yourself to try in it before resetting. I got one off ebay for around $3.

thank you for your input!! Keep your fingers crossed that it works as I also love the setting. What do I need to look for in a bench person to see if they can reset it?

I would just choose a fine jeweler as they generally will have good benches if they deal in high end jewelry. It is worth paying a little more to have it done right!

Oh I love this setting for your diamond. I hope it works perfectly for you.

sparkly...thanks! Im hoping because I got really lucky I came across it that somehow it just means it is meant to be for my diamond!

I really hope that it works for you as well. I really like your new setting! 1mm seems like such a small increment, but when it comes to diamonds it really creates a noticeable increase in spread. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! :))

Christina....define what "noticable increase in spread" means? I guess im not fully understanding how 1mm affects it so much....its not just a matter of tighten the prongs? If it needs a head change/the prongs are damaged, does that affect what size stone it can contain?

Okay, maybe this will make it easier to see what we are talking about. A 5mm stone is approximately .45-.47 in excellent cut stones. A .80 ct. is 6mm. So a .45 would have a 5mm head, and a .80 a 6mm head. It's just that when a ring is designed with side stones, etc., it would have proportions that are a little different for an almost .50 ct. stone versus a .80 ct. stone. Your stone is smaller than the original head size so it can be made to fit. It just may not look as good as the size stone the setting was intended to take. But hopefully it will be fine. If not, you could get a really pretty 6mm colored stone to set in the setting!

diamondseeker....ok, understand that! wow, that is quite a difference a mm makes. The side stones are all single cuts, so the proportion of those should still be right? And what does it needing a head change mean?

The head is the part with the prongs. They probably won't have to put in a new head (not sure, though), but the diamond would fit better in a 5mm head. You'll just have to see what your jeweler says about it.

so with my current solitaire setting, can the head of that make a head for the new setting? If it needs a new head, where does the old prongs go?

I hate to be a party pooper but I don't think a 5mm stone will fit in a 6mm mount. It will need a new head. That means the jewler will remove the whole center part of the ring, the part that holds the stone, and replace it with a new one. Hopefully they can make it work, but I don't think I would risk it. I would not want to ruin the mount personally. Also, it would be less expensive to buy a mount ready made for your diamond most likely.

dreamer....unfortunately my head seems to act in terms of I see something I like and just assume it will work. But I didnt really understand the process either, I figured smaller than what it originally held was better than bigger than. I searched for settings for awhile and was really struggling to find one i liked that was a true antique with the right proportions. If once it comes in it just absolutely wont work, then I will have to decide colored stone or wait for the right size diamond for it. I often see a million projects in my head, they just dont always come together as I hope:)
