My dad fell and broke his ribs

I called my mom and she tells me she's at the hospital.

My dad fell in mud (upstate NY- I guess snow melted).

She didn't know when I asked her how many?

Does anyone know his long this takes to heal and how it might affect his health in the future.

They can't do anything so they're just watching him. :o

edit- she said there is a spot on the lungs, but I didn't understand if that might be related.

Oh My!
Hugs to you Danny, and good wishes for your dad's speedy recovery.

Ouch, your poor Dad! My mother broke a couple of ribs when I was a teenager and it was extremely painful for her. There was nothing to be done except wait for them to heal themselves (it was a straightforward case) and rest as much as possible. I think it took about a month. Everytime she sneezed she used to groan in pain and we were banned from making her laugh.

Did your mother ask them to explain the spot on the lungs and what they meant by that? I hope he feels better soon.

Oh no!!

I'm sorry to hear that, Danny. Many years ago, my mom cracked a few ribs by falling on ice. There wasn't much they could do except to wrap her torso tightly in an elastic bandage (Tensor brand) which restricted her movement and in turn lessened the pain.

If your dad is up to it, have the doctor check out the spot on his lung. If he's ever had pneumonia, sometimes it will show up as a spot on one of his lungs. It's important that he has it checked out, though. :wavey:

dust dust dust! Hope all goes well for your dad - that's scary to be so far away and have to wait for news. :o Hopefully the spot is nothing, but I'd definitely encourage him to explore what's going on there....

Keep us posted???

I'm so sorry to hear this. My dad fell and broke two ribs a few years ago. I think the problem with broken ribs (or at least in my dad's case) is the docs were concerned about problems with his lungs as the result of shallow breathing. I could be wrong but I feel like they were specifically concerned about pneumonia. Dad was forced to use some sort of machine that forced him to take deep breaths (even though it hurt like hell) every half an hour or so.

I hope your dad gets well soon and has something to manage the pain in the meantime.

I am so sorry! I hope he has a quick recovery.

I'm sorry to hear this. Here's wishing for a speedy recovery.

Wishing your dad a very speedy recovery. I broke my ribs two summers ago, sailing. I had 6 fractures. Hurt like H*ll I won't lie. I got a body pillow to help support me, and that was a god send. I think it was a month before I was back to my normal self.
They don't wrap them like they used to, but taking it easy is KEY. And don't let him laugh, that kills...

I don't have any advice on broken ribs but may I still send dust to your Dad and wish him a speedy recovery anyway? :wavey:

Oh Danny, what rotten news. Especially when you're so far away, you feel helpless. My DH was in a car accident years ago & broke several ribs. As already stated, they don't do anything except wait with a watchful eye for them to heal. It is painful but does no lasting damage. Puppmom's comment about the necessity of taking deep breaths is a good one, especially in older people who are more susceptible to stuff like pneumonia -- you might ask your mom to discuss that w/the doctor.

It ain't no fun but shouldn't affect future activity at all once they're healed up. Dust & hugs for you!

Oh, lordy! :errrr:

That sounds like a painful episode, from what everyone says.

Can they give him some pills for the pain?

Hugs to you and your mom! No hugs for Dad though!

So sorry to hear this. I hear it is quite painful!

Ouch...sorry to hear about your Dad...sending lots of ***healing dust***.

Ouch!
Also sending prayers for a quick recovery.
I broke a rib skiing once.
Ditto to the others: Hurt like the Dickens breathing for a week or so. And don't make him laugh.

Sorry to hear that Danny. I am recovering from 2 fractured ribs right now. very painful. if the ribs are only broken and no more than one break per rib, but otherwise intact, pain management will likely be the main treatment. Current thinking is that tight wrapping of the chest only restricts breathing and can lead to pneumonia, so unless there are free pieces of rib no wrap. Six weeks to recover usually. Im still sore but not in pain. Hope he has similar recovery time.

Ouch!!, healing DUST for your dad.

Ouch. I do hope he gets better right quick. Dust for him...

I hate how slippery things get :nono:

Pneumonia is always something they want to avoid at all costs. I know it's still winter here, I didn't have that worry when I broke my ribs. When he gets home, have your mom have him propped up on pillows, to allow for full lung function. Having a humidifier might be a good thing. And again, that body pillow. I am a side sleeper and with broken ribs, no can do. I also love sleeping on my stomach again with broken ribs, not an option. Just having that edged up next to me helped a lot. Plus I had 2 dogs jumping on me, but they are gone now...

I needed the bed to be still or else I was in agony... I used half of a pain patch...I don't know the name, and am really not a person that does the pain stuff. But this was worse than a C section pain....

Thank you. I know she did- she said something to me- I think vI heard the word "pnemonia" but I was kind of shocked and she had to go- I'll ask her to go over that when I talk to her again.

My poor dad- that sounds so painful!

Thank you, everyone! :wavey:

VapidLapid, get well soon! :!:

Danny

You have received some good advice. I don't have anything else to add but wanted to pop in and wish your Dad a speedy recovery.
Sending you and yours love and some of that marvellous PS dust!
:wavey:

Hey Danny - any news this morning? any further details? Is it pneumonia? How is he fairing after his first night?

and your mom- she must be stressed out too. Hope it all goes smoothly - recovering and the nursing she'll be doing for him. Damn winter weather... slipping on ice/snow/mud is so easy to do.

I am so sorry to hear this Danny...sending loads of healing dust your dad's way and I hope the spot on the lung turns out to be nothing to be concerned about!

Sending speedy recovery dust your way too VapidLapid!

Danny i'm so sorry. Your poor dad. And it is horrible being so far away. I always fret about my parents because we're not in the same country. I dread one of them falling, think about it in the back of my mind whenever I hear its icy in the UK - so I really feel for your distress.

Keep up posted, we're thinking of you,
Abi

So sorry to hear that! I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Thanks so much, everyone! This is such a wonderful, supportive community. :wavey:

My mom called this morning and we were able to talk longer.

First, he broke two ribs in two places each. Ouch.

Second, the spot on the lungs did not show up on subsequent tests so that's good news.

He's coming home today. My sister went to pick him up because my mom has to work today.

I asked how she was doing. She said my dad is fine but he's going to have to be waited on hand and foot for awhile. That wasn't a direct answer but it means she's fine.

Luckily, my sister can help with that.

Be careful, everyone! I didn't know mud was dangerous like ice but apparently it is. :o

Oh my goodness!! ::HUGS::

Danny, I'm so glad to hear the lung test didn't show anything! DH broke two ribs once, he healed pretty quickly but it was years ago when he was barely in his twenties  I do remember him grousing about the PT for weeks though!

I'm glad your mum is doing okay, too, and that sis can help out a bit. How scary!!

Yssie, thanks! They live outside of Poughkeepsie in the "country" but it's not very rural anymore. So I want you and your DH to be careful! I extremely dislike even the thought of broken bones. I've never broken one and it seems so violent to me. Yikes! :wavey:

So glad your sister will be able to help your dad. The first few days are rough and you can't do much. Sounds like your Mom is doing well. Hugs to you too. You can always show support by calling, just don't make him laugh.... :wavey:
