This is going to be a long story as it chronicles everything my fiance and I went through to find the perfect engagement ring for us but hopefully this can help other people who are looking for cushions...

How my search for cushions started…
I had never really cared too much for any of the engagement rings that I had seen (the DeBeers design your own ring site, etc.), until I saw a close-up picture of Ashley Judd’s engagement ring in the February 2001 issue of Glamour and saw my first cushion-cut diamond. It was through googling ‘cushion cut diamond’ that I came across the Pricescope forum. I cannot stress how incredibly wonderful Pricescope is and that’s a testament to all the regulars who post on the forum. The forum has far and away been my best source of knowledge. I’d also like to thank Dave Atlas for answering personal e-mails from me regarding cushions (2 years or so ago now) and for the knowledge that he has provided on Pricescope, in particular, the tool that he created to view the shape and length to width ratio (it really helped me to determine what I was looking for in my diamond shape) and the Ideal proportions for fancy cut charts.

Since I know that everyone here stresses the importance of cut, I was looking to find ‘ideal’ proportion numbers for a cushion. Unfortunately, I was advised that cushions do not have ideal numbers and that I really needed to see them in person. I started by going to B&M stores because I wanted to see cushions in person. I found it almost impossible to find any. I did have one mall jeweler order one or two of them in for me, but he couldn''t give me any numbers on the stone (it was uncertified) and it really wasn''t very nice looking - bad bowtie effect. That was my biggest problem with cushions - being able to see any in person. After striking out a lots of B&M stores, I figured I would have to make the purchase from an internet dealer) I knew that I wouldn''t make the final purchase without seeing the diamond in person, but I also couldn''t ask a jeweler to order 20 or so stones for me to see in person.

The way I started searching was using the search engine on Pricescope. But first I needed to come up with some cut criteria #''s, so I began by looking at the AGA cut classes for fancy shapes. There is no ''standard'' for cushions so I kind of compared round, oval, radiant and emerald ideal numbers to come up with a set of my best idea of ''ideal cushion'' numbers for evaluation a diamond sight-unseen. I figured decent ranges for an ideal cushion would be:

Table: 57-63%
Depth: 60-65%
Crown: 12.5-14.5%

(Please note there is NO experience behind these numbers what so ever, just an amateur making a best guess based on similar shapes – I’m sharing so that someone else in a similar situation might be able to use these numbers if they like the look of my cushion)

I then determined the size, color, clarity, etc that I wanted and plugged those numbers into the pricescope search engine. There were a lot of matches. At first I contacted Whiteflash and they were nice and courteous, but I couldn''t see their diamonds in person anywhere and although they sent me images of the diamond certifications, they couldn''t get me magnified pictures or lightscope images or any other sort of analysis, so I decided that it''d be best to work with GOG, since they were both an internet and a B&M store and because I was really impressed with the tools that they use to evaluate stones - check out their website if you haven''t already (www.goodoldgold.com)

I sent the table/depth info above as well as the following to GOG for my search:

Carat: .90 - 1.2
length to width ratio: 1.13 - 1.3
Color: D-I
Clarity: IF - SI1

Originally, I had filled out a form on their site and Marie had gotten back in touch with me. She said that they didn''t really have access to any cushions that met my criteria at that time. At that point we weren''t in a big rush, so she said that she''d e-mail us if she found anything. About a month or so after my first contact w/ GOG I contacted them again (Jonathan directly this time) and told them that I was interested in looking at some stones that weekend as my fiancé (boyfriend at the time) and I would both be in NYC. (We live in NH, but I’m staffed in NYC and Chris would sometimes come to visit me there.) I gave Jonathan the criteria above and he sent me a list of diamonds that matched my criteria (although he didn''t determine the length to width ratios). He then asked me to tell him my top 5 picks. I narrowed them down by what was important to me (length to width ratio, color, clarity, etc). I sent him the list and he was able to get three of them in for me in a really short timeframe which was wonderful.

(continued from above...)

Meeting with Jonathan was great - he's so personable and not at all a 'salesman'. We looked at the stones under magnification, under different light sources, using something similar to an ideal scope. He even ran brilliance-scope tests on two of the stones for us. I really like all of the tools that he has to help compare the diamonds and it was neat to see the difference between the stones. Honestly I really liked all of the stones so it was hard to choose. I did notice that the internal pattern of the one we wound up getting was different from the other 2 he had in. The other two had an internal pattern sort of like cracked ice, whereas the one we ended up with had a 'chunkier' (for lack of a better descriptive word) pattern inside - kinda more like that of a round. So we decided on the diamond that day. Here are the specs for our stone:

.91 ct cushion cut diamond
Clarity: VS2
Color: G
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Measurements: 6.72 x 5.60 x 3.45 mm
Depth: 61.6%
Table: 63%
Girdle: Medium to Thick, faceted
Cutlet: small
length to width ratio: 1.2

Jonathan was really wonderful and spent a bunch of time with us and we even got to see some incredible pictures that he’s taken with his very cool digital SLR camera – also impressive. All in all it was just great for us to work with him and we felt completely comfortable with our purchase!

As for the setting, I had a really good idea of what I wanted but didn't find what I was looking for in their store. I gave Jonathan a picture of what I wanted (very thin platinum band with tiny diamonds set in it that went halfway around) and he said that they'd be willing to make it for me. They even said that they'd make it and if I didn't like it, they could make another one (they figured the setting was basic and pretty enough that someone would buy it). It took them about 3 weeks to make the ring and my fiancé went down to look at it when it was ready (I didn't only because I wanted the finished product to be somewhat of a surprise). He liked the ring and helped decide the height he wanted the diamond set at. He worked with Amy while he was there and said that she too was great to work with! The ring we have is a 2mm platinum comfort fit band which they set 14 tiny diamonds (.25 tcw) into. I'm not sure if the diamonds are technically pave set or prong set but either way, it's definitely the look that we were looking for. They then set the diamond in the ring and mailed it to my fiancé in NH.

I had asked for some advice about an independent appraisal. We wound up not getting one. Had I been dealing with anyone else we probably would have, but we felt so comfortable with everyone from GOG and we knew that for us the appraisal was only for insurance purposes, so we left it at GOG’s appraisal. We even got a little packet of information containing all the tests that were run on the diamond and some great pictures of the diamond. Christen was nice enough to e-mail those to me so I could share them with you as I’m having an awful time take any pictures of the ring that do it any justice whatsoever.

I didn’t know that Chris had the ring yet, so the proposal timing and the finished product were both a wonderful surprise for me. We love the ring and we’re so happy with our experience and wanted to share our praise for EVERYONE at Good Old Gold!! I’ve had it for a week and a half now and I still can’t stop looking it at. It’s so white and sparkly and rainbowey (yes, that’s a technical term

) all at the same time – I just love it, it’s definitely the perfect ring for me. I know that Jonathan usually deals with more standard shapes and in particular ‘ideal’ cuts, but I appreciate that he helped us choose a cushion that we’d be happy with. I love seeing all the beautiful hearts and arrows pictures, but I know that I wanted something a little different and for me the cushion was it!

Chris and I are both really happy with our purchase and very excited about being engaged. Now we just have to figure out when are where we plan on getting married

) I’m attaching the pictures that GOG took. The pictures look nice, but honestly I don’t think they do the ring justice. In person, it’s just so sparkly and has so much fire, it’s really beautiful.

Thanks again to everyone who posts here on the forum, your advice and knowledge have been invaluable. I hope this can help anyone else out there who’s looking for a cushion cut diamond.

And here's a side shot of the ring. Once I get some better ones I'll try to post more, like one of the ring on my hand.

You and Chris were such a pleasure to help and we love it when we are able to meet, face to face our Internet clients if time/circumstances allow. You really got an incredible stone. Demand for cushions are not high and I do not get the chance to inspect as many as I'd like but of the stones we had called in, that stone IMO just stood out from the pack. The optical tests proved it as well. Congrats to you and please send Chris our regards too!

Warm regards,

Rhino, Christen, Marie, Charles and the GOG staff.
