My fiance won''t be able to take it in yearly to get it checked. Is this a big deal? On average, how much would it cost to do this with a jeweler? Is yearly even necessary, or would that just be overkill?

Also, has anyone successfully done a trade up with the online jewelers reccomended here (White Flash, Blue Nile, ERD)?

Not a big deal, most local jewelers will do this for free. It''s always good to build a relationship with a local jeweler, for routine check ups and what not. Most people say to get their rings checked every 6 months or so, to make sure the prongs are ok, etc... Many people have traded up with WF. BN does not have an upgrade policy. GOG does. ERD, not sure, you''d have to ask about that.

I got my engagement ring from Whiteflash in the spring, and John Pollard told me that it''s okay to have a local jeweler (one who you trust) inspect and clean your ring(s) while you wait. Any actual work though would need to be done by Whiteflash. I can''t answer all your questions but hopefully this helped a little.

These are relatively small concerns. I buy pretty much all of my jewelry online and I haven''t had any issues with general maintenance and repairs. I''ve found a local jeweler that I trust here and they have done rhodium plating for me. They charge about $40 for this, and polish/check prongs for free.

I personally haven''t upgraded yet, but many here have successfully upgraded through WG, GOG, JA, etc. here. Mara comes to mind as someone who has upgraded several times through WF without any problems. YOu might want to do a search for "upgrade" to read more about people''s experiences.

If you can find what you want at a good price online, I would not let the maintenance factor be an issue...you can get that done at any local jeweler.
