Hi, I just bought an EGL certified 1.27 carat, F color, VVS1 clarity, brilliant cut diamond with very good proportions for $7,900 from a friend of mine that works with a wholesaler for someone very special that I will propose to soon.

As I studied the diamond with my naked eyes it looked perfect and I spent even more time checking it out with the magnifying loop and I could barely of not see any inclusions.

My friend told me it was a really good deal and that is why I bought it.

My questions are that, now that I am reading about GIA certificates, should I be worried that the specs of this diamond could go down a lot since it is only EGL certified (i.e. clarity and color)?

Based on the price I bought the diamond, would concur that is was a good deal? and would you recommend that I get a GIA certification for it or at least get a local jeweler to check it out.

Thank you

Firstly, EGL graded diamonds are almost always cheaper than GIA. This is in part because some believe that EGL are softer on grading, sometimes they can be 2 grades off or more. Also the division of the EGL lab can make a difference too it is said, EGL USA are thought to be the strongest lab, Israel, Antwerp, Europe lower.

My best advice is to pay $130 approx ( varies) and get an independant appraiser to look at the diamond to see if it checks out. Another jeweller might not have the expertise and may give you negative feedback anyway as the diamond wasn't sold by him. If you look under resources at the top of the page, there is an appraiser's list, maybe you can find one in your area with this. Regarding the GIA report, you could get it done, depending on what the appraiser says, but if this diamond grades lower then you can be fairly sure that GIA will grade it lower too.

Being a VVS1, a layman shouldn''t definitely be able to find the minuscule spots with a loupe. Very often a microscope is needed even for pros.
Not all EGL reports are inaccurate, but given the high ratings of your stone, I strongly suggest you have it professionally and independently appraised.

I would definately have it independently appraised right away. This year I sold an EGL stone given to me by a previous fiancee who insisted I keep the ring after we broke up. After 11 years of marriage to someone else, I decided I did not want the stone.

I paid for an independent appraisasl and was really shocked when my EGL Stone that was suppose to be F color and VVS1 turned out to be a VS1 and closer to an H color. So it was 2 color grades and 2 clarity grades off.

BUT that being said, it was still a very pretty stone. Had I married that person, I would have been very happy to wear that stone but what got me is that he paid a premium for F and VVS1 and had he wanted a VS1 and H color he could have saved money.

Is it a beatuiful stone? is it well cut?

I think sometimes people on here can get caught up and numbers etc. That price sounds very good for F vvs1 and carat weight you have listed but I don''t think you said much about cut?

Cut can affect price and beauty of a stone as well. I would rather have a G or H super ideal cut than a F so/so cut.

I would not go below H though. Some people love their I/J/K stones but for me below H is where I start to see yellow.

Definitely go get it appraised, not at a jewelry store, but at an independent appraiser - there is no conflict of interest there (nothing you are told can be interpreted to be something to get you to buy from the jeweler instead), and the independent appraisers have been trained specifically to appraise. There is a good section under the resources button at the top of the page for appraisers.

Without an independent appraisal it is impossible to tell what kind of ''deal'' you got. I recently posted on a stone with an EGL report that we purchased which was 2 color grades and two clarity grades off (I looked at the master set and under the microscope with the appraiser myself) - and worth thousands upon thousands less than we paid. Fortunately we were able to return it. At that time we did not think EGL could possibly be that far off (two full colors and clarities), and thought the anti-EGL sentiments on this forum were probably overstated. Now I understand.

Yes, I would expect the stats could go down with an appraisal HOWEVER, a VS1 H is a FANTASTIC stone and might be worth exactly what you paid for it :) I''d double check with a pro on the cut quality though!

How are you defining ''very good'' proportions? That can also tell you a lot about the stone''s worth. Did you have a sarin or something to determine the proportions?

Just had to add that those of us who love the IJK stones DO often see the yellow... but we embrace it :)
