...an Infinity I I1

Wink sent me the video:
http://www.screencast.com/t/OTIxZmJiO (ETA: I fixed the links in the next post)

Long story short -- last summer when I was looking to upgrade my .53 J VS2 Infinity to a @1 carat Infinity, Glitterata suggested this stone:

http://www.highperformancediamonds.com/index.php?page=view-id-diamond-infinity&id=401

in this thread:

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/infinity-upgrade-balancing-the-cs-need-feedback-on-two-stones.120346/

At the time, I wanted to go lower in color than an I, so I chose my 1.0 M SI2 and had it set in this setting (photos in this thread):

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/im-seeing-purple-photos-from-wink-of-my-purple-sapphire-halo-setting.128291/

This ring has been so much fun to wear (anniversary upgrade) and when I was shopping for a new wedding band to wear with it, jewelers admired the stone and asked to look at the cut under their scopes -- the Infinity cut is that good! One jeweler even called over a young sales associate and told her that she should look at my stone under the scope because the "cut of this stone is something you don't see every day."

The color is typically ivory, and sometimes, depending on the light and on what I'm wearing, a warm, buttery gold. Delicious! The M color is very changeable, and after a few months of wearing the ring in the gloom of a Midwestern late fall and winter, I've realized that my sweet spot for color is in the J range. So I e-mailed Wink and asked him if it would be possible to change out my center stone. He said it would be possible if I found stone with near exact proportions to the M SI2.

Well, fortunately, Infinity stones are cut so tightly and precisely, that there were several contenders to choose from on Wink's site. But I kept coming back to the I stone with strong blue fluorescence. But, ewww, it was an I1!! So I asked Wink to call it in and give me his impressions of the stone. He says it's clean to his eyes, and I trust him, so I'm packing up my ring to send it to him tomorrow so he can make the change.

Thank goodness for Infinity's incredible upgrade policies! And thank goodness for Wink's patience and his bench's skill.

Because of the incredible service offered by Wink and Infinity, I was able to live with my M for long enough to see it in many lighting conditions (Midwestern gloom is hell on diamonds!), and when I found my color "sweet spot" I was able to make the change without a lot of extra $$$ or fuss.

This is why anyone searching this site for advice on which vendor to choose should strongly consider the vendor's upgrade policies -- sure, many of us, at the time we buy a diamond, think upgrade policies don't matter because we'll never upgrade (I certainly thought this way!), but you never know.

Wink said he's going to make a video of my ring with the M and then a new video of the ring with the I, and I'll definitely post pictures when I get the ring back.

So if anyone is looking for an Infinity 1.0 M SI2 that shoots huge chunks of rainbow colors...check with Wink!

Can''t wait to see!!

It really is nice to have that security of knowing you can upgrade whenever you feel like it

Now if only I had a few extra grand lying around... I''d snatch up your old M in a heartbeat..

Yay for you Sara, it''s a gorgeous stone. I hope the M goes to a PS''er!!!

I couldn''t see the dragonfly setting, it didn''t work for me?? I''ll try again later??

But am thrilled for you.

Fun! Enjoy your upgrade!

It looks beautiful Sara! Looking forward to seeing it!

Hi, yssie -- Thanks -- I will miss the M -- it is so beautiful. And, you''re right, upgrade policies make all the difference. They are a form of "satisfaction insurance" even if you never use them!

Kaleigh, Here''s the correct link for my Dragonfly setting thread:

As always Dear Lady, thank you for the kind words! You certainly make my business exciting and enjoyable as you always do every thing with such gusto!

Wink

Sara!! We missed you!

Sara, I too decided to jump up 4 color grades and down one clarity grade with my recent upgrade and I am utterly and completely happy about the decision! You will notice a huge difference in color and I suspect you will also be very happy with your choice.

And I als agree that upgrade policies are wonderful for exactly these types of situations. You and I both were "allowed" to expeiment with lower colors and learn what we like without too much muss and fuss.

And that is a really good looking clarity plot for you new I1. All the inclusions look farily small and disbursed, and they are white it looks like too from the type of inclusions, so I am not at all surprised it is eye clean!

Did you make sure it is clean to your standards as well as Winks? Are you near sighted? Just things to think about when buying lower clarity diamonds...

awww Sara!! how ya been? missed you! well I sure do love your M

BUT.... totally understand as the I will be gorgeous in that beautiful setting!

Thank you for your kind words, Wink. I already miss my ring, but I know she's in good hands.

Kaleigh, I hope the M goes to a PS'er, too. She's a heck of a bargain and a real beauty.

MC, Junebug -- thank you!

Hi, Lorelei, D&T, and Dreamer -- I've missed all of you, too.
35.gif

I had a very busy couple months at work, and then, sadly, my father-in-law passed away right after Thanksgiving, and then I had a health scare (I'm okay) right after the New Year, and so I haven't been online much.

Apparently there have been some big changes around PS, too!

Lorelei has a new designation -- congratulations!! It's well-deserved; your advice and support have been invaluable to me throughout my diamond buying "journey." I never would have been brave enough to go with an M or an SI2 or an I1 without the information I got from PS prosumers like you.

D&T has a beautiful new setting in her avatar!! And Dreamer went up four color grades??!!! I'm off to search for your threads to find out more.

But, yes, Dreamer, I totally agree, it's nice to work with vendors who have excellent upgrade policies! It makes getting exactly what you want much easier. And it's all about balancing the four C's. With my budget, I have to be willing to be flexible on clarity and color to get the cut quality and carat size I want.

I was talking to Wink the other day and I mentioned how much I appreciated the Infinity upgrade policy, because it gives me the assurance that if I change my mind about my stone, for whatever reason, my options aren't limited by short return periods, or spending requirements, and that made me feel a lot more confident about making such a large purchase online. Also, it gave me the freedom to experiment with color and clarity (and save a lot of money) in a way that just wouldn't be possible with other companies. That's what I meant by Infinity's upgrade policy providing "satisfaction insurance." Even if I never upgrade, I know I can, if, for whatever reason, I want to.

I remember Arjunajane's thread awhile back about her GOG experience, and Dreamer's threads about her maybe uprading her K color from Brian and Lesley (which apparently happened
36.gif
). Good upgrade policies are worth their weight in gold -- even if you don't "plan" on using them, because, hey, life happens, people change their minds. Upgrade policies are "satisfaction insurance" in my experience!

My M was really lovely, but, as I mentioned, the color change was dramatic under different lights. I thought I would love that, but once I wore it for a few months, I just wanted it to be ONE color, not 10 different colors! I didn't expect this to happen. Other people didn't notice it nearly as much as I did. I guess I am more color sensitive than I knew. And I really missed the color of my J. It was soft white, which I love, but the color did not change so much. It rarely showed any tint and then I had to be specifically looking for it and the lighting had to be just right.

Here are my thought processes on the clarity grade:

I would have never considered an I1 before I learned about Infinity's cut quality (and had I not seen photos of Glitterata's two Infinity I1's). My M was an SI2, and had a cavity on the edge of the table, and I never, ever could see that cavity with my eyes even when I knew exactly where to look, though I could see it under the loupe. I never saw the feather or the cloud or the crystal in the M either -- even with my loupe. I do believe ideal cut diamonds can hide a lot of the ickies that stick out like sore thumbs in poorly cut stones.

I am very far-sighted actually, so I'd be surprised if I see anything in the I1 with my own eyes, even with my glasses. Wink's eyesight is better than mine (and he's older than me, too -- not fair!). Wink told me he shot the video of the I I1 in his new lightbox, so it's an excellent representation of the stone. I considered the "mind-clean" aspects of an I1 (hey, I am a PS'er!) and I know what would bother me (big clouds, haziness, dark inclusions, feathers that compromise durabiity) so I'm okay with a little scatter shot plot of clear crystals.

Actually, I was more concerned about the strong fluorescence, so Wink -- the dear man -- walked the stone outside while I waited on the phone to double check that the stone was not over blue. I'm kind of excited to see a little blue in it, though!

I told Wink that if I win the lottery, I'll be back for several Infinity diamonds of varying sizes, colors and clarities (and an Octavia, too, of course, Karl!!).

But until then, I'm looking forward to wearing a diamond that doesn't change its color "personality" quite so often.

This was my observation with my K too. I wonder why?

Oh, I''m glad to see you started a separate thread on this color change phenomenon, Dreamer. Now I''m off to check out your color upgrade thread!

YAY Sara. I love your ring and Wink is such a great guy to work with so I''m not surprised that you are such a happy customer. I can''t wait to see the video of the comparison of the diamonds set. Very cool!

That M is stunning. And would just make a knock out pendant. Would that I had the money... hope someone snatches it up though, great deal!

Thanks, Gypsy!

Wink is the greatest. And your ring is still one of my all-time PS faves!

Yay Sara! I''m so excited for you, and I can''t wait to see the new diamond!

It looks very pretty. I can''t wait to see "live" pictures of it.

Houston, the Eagle has landed!

Wink

P.S. I love your comments about Satisfaction Insurance. It is nice to know how some of the policies of the vendors here are perceived by our clients!

HI:

I was very happy with the Infinity I1 I had (earring). You''ll enjoy yours to be sure....

cheers--Sharon

Sara~sometimes it takes living with a stone to know if it is the right one. I''m glad you will be getting a color that you will enjoy

Thanks for stopping by, MarcyC, Brown-eyed-girl, canuk-gal, and risingsun! Wink made a video of my ring with the M still in it, and the I stone. This week he''ll send me a video of the ring with the I in it.

Transition from M to I

I''ll post a thread in SMTR, too.
