I'm trying to get as much diamond as I can on a limited budget.
Turns out that my timing is good - a lot of folks are having to sell jewelry on Craigslist.

You might think that there are scams. Like using a legitimate certificate or report but trying to pass off a CZ. And that may be happening, except for the fact that very few people selling their rocks know enough to get it certified or appraised.

One lady wants me to drive 40 miles to see her stone. It's G-I, 1ct, and VVS2~VS2. It could be the find of the century, but I doubt it.

And then there are the multitudes who are asking prices based on appraiser values ("my 0.50 ct K I-1 appraised for $5K, willing to sacrifice for $2K"). Or comparing to Costco prices. Or the price at the mall.

One guy was priced so silly and had a sob story, that I played Good Samaritan and pointed him to Bluenile for a more reasonable price comparison. I figured that it's hard enough to have to sell an engagement ring, it'll be worse when he accuses folks of low-balling when in fact they are offering fair prices. Needless to say, he shot the messenger and blew up on me. It was funny getting emails from him asking me if I was going to take the word of 'some' small online place like Bluenile. I wished him well.

But there have been a few prepared sellers. They have the right certification. And the right price. I figure Craigslist isn't the only place they've tried. They probably found out that a pawn shop will offer 40% of Bluenile retail price.

I met one guy today at a jewelers in the mall. 0.91ct, F VS2. EGL certificate says Excellent cut. (Doesn't say EGL USA) And it was sparkly and such. The mall jeweler even looked at it and said that it was consistent with F VS2 (not moissanite or CZ either).
Depth 62.6%

Crown 15%
Pavilion 43%
Girdle Medium
Polish/Symmetry VG, VG

The search continues.

There are bargains out there.

I just appraised a diamond which a couple bought off Craigslist. I figured the wholesale value to be $22,500, and they had paid $17,500.

Estate buyers would usually pay 50 to 70% of wholesale for a diamond like this, which would be in the $11,000 to $16,000 range. So at $17,500 the seller got more than he would from an estate dealer, while the buyers bought it for quite a bit less than if they'd bought it from either an internet vendor or a bricks & mortar jeweler.

Just be sure to get it checked out by a knowledgeable appraiser. This diamond for example was over graded 1 color and 1 clarity grade.

Richard,

As you say - there are bargains out there.

What I wish I could find is a local gemologist who would be willing to do a basic check: color, clarity, real diamond. Basically, is this a legit stone.

When it comes to cut, I am hoping that the stars will align: the gemologist confirms that the gem is like the one in the certificate, and the certificate carries cut details.

How do I find a gemologist who would help and what should I offer to pay?

Have you tried the appraisers list under the resources button at the top right of your screen?

If no appraiser close to you is listed, you can try googling your area. Also, you might try calling three or four jewelry stores in your area to see who they recommend.

As far as a verbal gem ID, color, clarity and general cut analysis, along with a value, I would expect you could find appraisers willing to do this in the $45 to $75 neighborhood. The lower range for smaller stones (1 carat and below?) with the price going up for larger stones.

That''s just a guess you can use as a general guideline.

I got my find on ebay and I used an appraiser that was listed here on pricescope and I was very happy, good luck in your hunt.
