My 4ct e-ring is loose again.

Hello Everyone.
I am hoping someone can help me here. My husband purchased my e-ring 5 years ago in SF. I picked the setting he found the stone and the jeweler. He proposed with 4.02 ct, round diamond, 2 baquettes on the side in platinum. In 5 years, the stone was loose probably 4-5 times and I had to go to the jeweler to fix it. I did not go to the same jeweler since we moved to the east coast. I fixed it couple of times in Europe and in the US. I notice yesterday that the stone is loose again. I am afraid it might fall out. One jeweler told me that because of the size of the stone it is normal and i have to go and check every 6 months. Other told me that I should have put 6 prongs instead of 4 or do double prongs. The original jeweler did not suggest that when ring was purchased and I did not think this will be a problem.
I feel like the prongs have been bent because it was fixed so many times. I have a feeling the setting was not made properly but maybe i am wrong.. I love my setting but I am little sad and paranoid that i might loose my stone one day if i don''t pay attention and check myself if the stone is loose.
Does anyone have the same problem with their setting? What are my options?
I am in NYC now.. who can I go to to fix the stone?

Butterfly - I am so sorry to hear about the troubles with your ering. I had similar problems with mine, although my stone is much smaller

Ultimately DH and I decided to chuck the setting altogether and get a new one. Along with that came my new diamond, which I should have by Tuesday

Is there obvious wear on your setting or is it apparent that the prongs are now bent? Maybe you could post some pics so we can see what you are talking about

I would suggest having Leon Mege remake your setting from scratch.

hmm, so sorry about your problem, 4 ct is a whole lot of rock for four prongs- not one that I would feel comfortable putting in, I would have 6 prongs holding if it were me as they are deemed more secure (if one was out, you still got five more to hold that baby up), but its your choice, are you set on 4 prong. many will say they haven''t had problems but they get it checked more frequently though.

I would definitely look at getting more prongs and maybe even a new setting. I would be terrified of loosing the stone.

Ditto - I would look into having Leon Mege make a stunning setting. A stone of that size needs to be securely (and beautifully!) set. Come back with pics!

This is a common problem with larger stones with four prong settings. If you can swing it, leon mege is the master of doing really beautiful settings for larger stones (although he works with smaller too).

Ditto. I know you love the setting and it has sentimental value, but if you had Leon Mege make a setting for your diamond, you would have a [very] beautiful setting and a feeling of security about not losing the stone. This is the first thing that popped into my mind too.

With a 4 ct ring I would not want to risk losing my diamond at all. I would get it re-set with more prongs that are properly fitted. I know that it has sentimental value, but think about what would happen if you lost the diamond?

I heard about Leon and that he is making beautiful settings. I wish we found PS long before we purchased the diamond and the setting. By looking quickly through his work, I noticed that most of his settings have 4 prongs.. Or double 4. I guess that means that he does a good job and I will not have problems with a loose stone if I decide to go with him?! I think I will give him a call and schedule a consultation? Or maybe if he looks at my ring, he will be able to fix it?

I really like the setting with 2 side baquettes..although I don''t see it a lot on this website. My second favourite setting is cushion pave (like Harry Winston). But since I don''t have a cushion, I have to find a setting that I like. If I will change the setting, I figured I would do a different this time.. what do you all think?

Getting it reset sounds like a great idea, you don''t want to loose your stone. Everything I''ve seen on here of Leons work as been beautiful. Good luck with your reset and please let us know how it goes. Pictures to please

Yes, most of his prongs are four, but almost all of his four prong settings use a basket where the girdle is very close to the basket bridge. He also custom makes each piece for your particular diamond. The fit should be good and it *shouldn''t* come loose as frequenty, but best to consult with him.

I don''t know about having it remade ....my center stone a MUCH SMALLER

2.24 gets loose all the time. I would say at least once a week(and it a Leon Mege ring, I don''t think that is that LM did something wrong but the prongs are small, fragile things and get caught on hand towels, sweaters, whatever it touches....) . Luckily I have a local jeweler who has been very kind to tighten my prongs. I have seen maybe three since I got the ring and all of them thought the prongs had been made too small and thought it needed to be redone.

I think with any setting you run the risk of having your stone be loose and wiggle around. Personally I would be THRILLED to have my stone only get loose once a year! I don''t even use my ultrasonic or a strong bristle toothbrush anymore on my engagement ring its just too delicate.....though it is of course 100% lovely and I don''t think I would be happy with any other design. LOL.

Hmmm, that''s interesting. My Leon 3.5ct pear, which has a spread more like a 4ct pear, has 5 teeny tiny prongs (I attach picture for you to see) and the centre stone is as intact as can be and nothing ever gets caught in the claws. I''ve had the ring for almost a year now.

(Incidentally, my melee diamonds are also all there, nothing dropping out, nothing loose).

The only thing is with it being platinum, it''s got a bit scratched at the bottom of the band (where there''s no diamond, just metal). I think it''s because Pt is softer than WG and am too terrified to have anyone else re-polish it for me.
