Well.....I think I''ve decided on the setting pretty much, and am in the final moments of selecting the rock. I''ve narrowed down my search using the following criteria:

$19,500 price limit (For the rock)
I colorcolor or better
SI1 clarity or better
Very Good or better cut

My question is..... it''s completely eye clean from the top and has a great deal of fire and scintillation, HOWEVER, I noticed that when I view the diamond from the pavilion, or from the bottom rather, I can see a carbon fleck inside when holding it about 8 inches from my face. I''m going to set this in a 6 prong setting so I''m not sure if anyone out there has experience with a diamond of this size, roughly, with a carbon inclusion. I''d just like to know if this will be visible once set, or if I''m just over-analyzing. Everything about the diamond other than the carbon fleck is great......but let me know what you think.....

Here''s the GIA cert along with a picture of the rock and the idealscope to follow....

I am guessing that you have seen this diamond in person right? Putting this into a six prong setting can hide the side view of the inclusion to a point. That being said if someone is inspecting your rock that closely then they have an issue. Sometimes when you take a stone in different lighting conditions you can see inclusions you didn''t see in other conditions. So my thought is just make sure that they have a good return policy. Is this a reputable seller??? There are many stones that are beautiful in your price range a little smaller then the one you are looking at. That being said though if the inclusion doesn''t bother you then by all means a beautiful stone is really in the eye of the beholder. I personally on the other hand, would wait to spend that kind of money on a rock that wasn''t questionable. Good luck.

Yes I went to see the diamond in person. It was a real sparkler, and appeared very nice except for the carbon when I viewed the diamond from beneath. The merchant has a 10 day return policy and is a very reputable seller based on reviews of this board and others that I visit on a regular basis. I''m just curious how it will look once mounted. (i.e. the inclusion will or will/not be visible)

I would say that if you could only see it from the bottom and it was a nice stone then by all means go for it. I did do a search for others around that size and either found them out of your price range or much smaller. A 6 prong setting should really hide that inclusion and since you cannot view the underside once set I would say that you have a good stone. It will give it class and you will always know it is your stone. Enjoy and good luck!

Thanks a lot for your opinion Wen. I think I''m going to go for it too. The manufacturer said that they would set the stone so that you could see as little of the inclusion as possible. I think it will be ok, but I just wanted to see what you guys thought. I''ll post some pictures after I get the ring in a few weeks.

So you can only see it from the bottom? and you can''t currently see it from the side or top? then why would you be able to see it from side or top once mounted? you DEFINITELY won''t be viewing it from the bottom once mounted LOL!

If knowing it''s there doesn''t bug you if you can''t see it, then it sounds like a geat stone. Clarity is graded face-up, just as an aside.

Good luck!

Well, I can see the inclusion a bit from the side (pavilion) which is what concerns me. Once it''s mounted in the 6 prong setting the designer said that it would be nearly invisible under normal viewing conditions. Plus I get a 10 day money back guarantee after I receive it, so I guess it''s worth the try. I''d just have been happier with a clear/white inclusion rather than a black carbon one. Anyone on this board have a stone with a carbon inclusion like this?

This is what you can find with an SI clarity, indeed even some higher clarity grades may show something from the side. Some actually like a tiny birthmark in their diamond, it helps personalize it - also they know their diamond immediately if it has to be out of their possession for a time. It depends on your own comfort level.

It wouldnt worry me at all. In fact I would imagine that if this tiny speck wasnt there this stone would not be as affordable to you. So for something that is invisible once set, I wouldnt worry, but would be happy that Im getting a cheaper stone in the process.

Of course the decision is much harder if the inclusion is visible on the top! I was going to choose a magnificent 3 carat D color rb, excellent cut......but my dh couldnt stand the 2 pepper spots on the table!!!! Those 2 pepper sprinkes were what enabled the stone to be in our budget!!!! I could handle it, but he couldnt!!!!

But underneith is out of site, out of mind!!!

I wouldn''t worry about it. Once it''s mounted, you''ll not be able to view the stone from the ''upside-down'' perspective, and you can ask for it to be set in the setting in such a way that it''s obstructed in side-view by a prong.

I wouldn''t give it a second thought...instead, I''d just enjoy the fab cut and the AMAZING size! Woo-hoo!

Awesome. Thanks a lot for your opinions. I feel a lot better after hearing a bit of rationality from everyone. I''ll let you know how it all turns out =)

I wouldn''t have BLINKED AN EYE, let me tell you! In my mind, that little birthmark would be a NON-issue. Once that beautiful rock is set, no one will ever see ANYTHING. Great job!

Thanks for your opinion Lynn. I think I agree. I''m planning on getting the SuperbCert Tiffany solitaire replica setting, which I think would make a 2.5 ct really pop out. I know my gf is pretty old fashioned and loves "classic" looking things. So I guess the next step is ordering the ring and figuring out how I''m going to propose!

Can your jeweler put the stone in question into a semi mount similar to what you''d get, so you can see if the inclusion is noticeable?

Good point. I''ll be sure to ask if they can do something like that for me before I actually commit.

you might also consider using a "basket head" 4 prong center. that usually does the trick of covering while at the same time allowing enough light to enter. It''s not the Tiffany look though of course but it''s still elegant enough i think
