My son showed me this bird last night, and I am utterly facinated with it and just had to share. It''s too good not to, though I''m sure this will be of no surprise to our Aussie friends!

That is really really cool! I''ve never heard of this bird before.

I''ve heard of plenty of pet parrots who will mimic the phone, doorbell, microwave, etc so convincingly that their owners run to pick up the phone or answer the door.

re lyre birds... arent they GREAT?

i don't know if you've ever been to australia, but they're not all that uncommon here. if you were to go for even a short drive down the south coast, you'd hear them in plentiful numbers. they have the sort of rich song which one comes to associate with wetter areas of the Australian bush.

if you live near the bush, tho, as i did for many years, they can freak you out a bit. if you're, say, sitting on your outdoor deck one evening, and you start hearing a camera clicking for example, one's first thought is not normally "oh - it's a lyre bird!" when i was young, i used to live near a large bird and koala sanctuary and i used to have tennis lessons in courts that adjoined the sanctuary. those birds did a fabulous impersonation of balls being hit... "donk...donk...donk donk...thwack..."

i think their own song is the prettiest tho - they have a beautiful call :)
 
I love these birds, they are so much fun to watch! I saw a video very similar (maybe even the same one, no idea) last year and I kept showing it to anybody that would watch it - the chain saw is the best!

Thanks for showing that Ellen! Lyrebirds are absolutely fascinating. I used to go horseriding in rainforesty type bush where there were lots of lyerbirds. They used to mimick the sounds of the horses snorting and clip clopping. We''d whip our heads around looking for the other riders that appeared to be following us, only to realise it was a lyrebird

Dandi, that is too funny. I just cannot get over not only how well they can mimic, but the scope of sounds. I wonder if there''s anything they can''t do....


I still crack up in the second vid, where it''s really intent on the construction sounds, and at about 3:35, it breaks into a worker whistling. Weird.
