music bands and price ranges

I''m in the middle of my band search and I''m surprised at the wide range of prices (NY metro area). I''m seeing anywhere from 3K to 7K for a range of 5-7 piece bands. Based on the clips we see on the internet and cd''s they send it''s hard to know the reason for the wide ranges.
Has anyone been to a wedding / or planning a wedding that knows what are "musts" in choosing a band? Minumum # of pieces,etc? We''re having a small wedding and what something classy yet fun/energetic.
