I don't have a horse in this race, but I found an article in Tuesday's "Washington Post" fascinating. Has anyone else here been following this story?
According to a piece by David Ignatius, Abdurahman Alamoudi, pled guilty on July 30 to violating US sanctions against Libya and, as part of his plea bargain, provided an account of how he was hired by Qaddafi to assasinate Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, a plot set in motion between the spring of 2003 and September 2003.
Libyan intelligence opeartives have backed the story of Mr. Alamoudi and Saudi Arabia is holding 15 alleged conspirators in the plot.
The story is of interest because it shows that while President Bush was congratulating himself on having subdued Libya through his "toughness", Qaddafi was actually engaged in plotting terrorism. Bush was, in fact, sending mixed signals to Qaddafi and allowing Qaddafi to think that he could now get away with more now as a Bush ally.
As I said, I don't have a horse in this race. I am glad that secrets kept by President Bush, whose policies I abhor, come to light. On the other hand, I am not a great fan of the Saudi ruling family. Nonetheless, I found this interesting.
