What is the going rate for mounting a .77 carat stone? I didn't get taken buying the stone, now I don't want to get taken on the mounting. Also is it best to buy a mounting locally or on the net?
Problem is who will set the diamond? Who will stand behind the mounting and setting work? Buy the mounting on the net and not many jewelers are going to want to set it and certainly not take the risk in doing so. Send your diamond to a web company and when it becomes loose (if ever) or needs resizing (maybe years), or a manufacturing problem (one never knows), then send it back. Pay the postage both ways, and maybe even some repair cost. Be without your ring for at least 7 to 10 days (using fedex both ways) and maybe as many as 25 to 30 (using registered mail). Then when everything comes back, go to your local jeweler to see if it is correct and the proper diamond is back in your mounting. If it isn't correct just start over.
You may want to find a good local jeweler you can work with and he should be happy to set the diamond if he is selling the mounting. You will create a relationship which in years to come can be very valuable.
This is a fairly typical problem, and your best answer is to find a good local to deal with.
