FI didn''t originally think his mom would want to do this, but turns out she does. . . which leads to a few questions:

- Does anyone have any suggestions for a song? He doesn''t really like anything with any kind of country twang. . .and it''s hard to find something that''s comfortably non-romantic.

- When within the scope of the reception does this happen? We are also going to have our first dance (Come Away With Me, Norah Jones) and a father-daughter dance (My Girl, The Temptations) so when does this all happen - I feel like having people stand around and watch 3 dances is sort of odd. . .

Thanks!

Hey!

MH and my MIL danced to "Unforgettable" by Nat & Natalie King Cole....It was really sweet!!!

How important is it to you to have the spotlight on you and your dad? If it''s not that big of a deal, you could consider both dancing at the same time... like right as your dance ends, you both go and get your parents and dance with them.

Also, you could invite everyone to dance with their fathers or everyone to dance with their mothers while you do the two dances. I''ve seen that done, and it''s kind of a nice thing that involves everyone. That would assume that you have a lot of family type guests though instead of mostly friends who''s parents would not be there.

There''s nothing wrong with wanting a dance alone with your dad, so if it''s important to you then keep that; I''m just offering alternatives

I wouldn''t mind as a guest if someone had 3 spotlight dances in a row at a wedding. I probably wouldn''t watch them all the way through though unless the groom was my family member.

oh, a song suggestion - what a wonderful world.

We did the mother/son and father/daughter dance at the same time, we used "My Girl" like you are using. I thought it was a good cover for both ladies in DH's life.

Thanks ladies! In theory, I like the idea of having both dances at the same time, but. . . I don''t know. . . I''ve had my heart set on dancing with my dad to "My Girl" and I don''t like that songs as much for FI and his mom. . .

I feel kind of like a prissy princess, but I really want that dance with my dad - we did the same song at my Bat Mitzvah and I am *definitely* a Daddy''s girl, so I think it willl be special for him, too. . .

I like the song suggestions - please keep them coming! I''m waiting for one to feel *right.* FI has nixed almost every suggestion as being too cheesy or too much of a love song. . .

my aunt and cousin did not want that typical mother son song.. so they danced to Dancing Queen by ABBA. it actually made everyone weep... really sweet moment

I just got married last month and danced to "The Heart of Life" by John Mayer with my mother... Easy for a band to cover... plus its non-traditional, and I love coffee house/ folk music, so it worked out well...

Here''s the song / video...

What about - You look wonderful tonight by Eric Clapton?

I love that song, but some of the lyrics might be a little weird for a mother/ son!

My brother and sister in law had her dad and my mom choose the songs for their respective dances. They kept it a surprise until it was time for the dance, so my brother and sister in law didn''t know what they would be dancing to. It stressed my mom out a little but (but she stresses out about everything), and she ended up really liking having this as a thing for her to chose! Just an idea...

Yep... Van Morisson''s "Have I told you lately" is popular too... As is Lee Ann Womack''s "I Hope You Dance."

Its hard to find a song about love, thats not an "in-love" song...

Here''s a good list:

Do you have a band of DJ? Not all bands can handle all songs...

Actually, FI''s mom suggested the Eric Clapton, but FI thought it was too romantic so they have now asked me for suggestions. . . I was going to just have them pick, but that was tossed right back into my lap.

I love the John Mayer one - thanks, sna77! Thanks for the list, too. . . I''m still looking for a few more outside-the-box ideas.

We wil likely use "simple man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The lyrics are great and I can totally see my future MIL telling my FI these words:

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.
Take your time... dont live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
Go find a woman and youll find love,
And dont forget son,
There is someone up above.

(chorus)
And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Be a simple kind of man.
Wont you do this for me son,
If you can?

Forget your lust for the rich mans gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

(chorus)

Boy, dont you worry... youll find yourself.
Follow you heart and nothing else.
And you can do this if you try.
All I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

I don''t know if I''m mature enough to hear a Leonard Skynard song and not yell "Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeebird!"

hee hee. I know what you mean. That is funny. But, i love that song so much!

My husband and his mother danced to "Close to You" by the Carpenters, which I think is pretty ambiguous.

As for when it happens, talk to your DJ. Our DJ had us do all of them at the beginning, because people don''t want to keep having to sit down and watch dances all night. It seems odd, but most people would rather sit through those three songs at the beginning and have it done with so they can just enjoy the rest of the night.
