Interesting. Rounding out the top 5:

5. San Francisco
4. Los Angeles
3. Detroit
2. New York

And the most stressful

1. Chicago

Thoughts?

I''m not surprised to see NY on there

but Chicago did surprise me.

I live in Chicago, and while I dont find it extremely stressful...that may just be because of my job, and my lifestyle.

Gas prices are completely out of control...I drive an SUV, it costs me about 80 a week to fill it up

The job market here is tough...about a year ago I was looking for new employment...never happened, and now I'm thankful to have the job security I do.

So yea, I can see the articles point.

I live in good ''ol chicago, and I don''t think I am too stressed either!

Italia - you are right, the job market is a bit rough right now, but otherwise I love this city!

NYC here, and the stress over subway seats and cabs made me laugh. we know that during rush hour either is impossible to get. no stress there. I don''t think a bartender, or reservations is an issue here either. Can''t comment on the preschools.

What is stressful is trying to get around the tourists in the morning. They just stop in the middle of a busy street to look around, and hold up pedestrian traffic. That drives me crazy, especially when chances are you''re already late.

Housing costs are terrible here, but if you''re a native of new york, it doesn''t faze you either. Just a part of life.

You know elle what made me laugh about your post was the subway seats and tourist.

When we go to NY to visit we don’t use taxis, we normally get on the subway or walk. The first time I took FI to NY, we went for the weekend so the subway traffic in the city wasn’t as bad as it is during the week. The second time around we went during a weekday. When we got out of the subway, the both of us had a migraine. And we only stayed on for maybe 2 stops. I don’t know how New Yorkers do it.

And the tourist thing, we are SO guilty of that. We’ll stop to take pictures of a billboard in the middle of 42nd. LOL

sales tax in Cook County is 10 %! I was shocked. In Philly it is 6% and there is not tax on most clothing and shoes. Gas was high there too, but it is pretty high all over.

Totally shocked Philly is not in the top 5, but I am sure it is up there!

Before I even looked I thought "Detroit". I live in the suburbs of Detroit and work in the Detroit area (at a charter school). It''s pretty tough here job wise, I just graduated and it was a miracle that I found a job!! The economy is definitely putting the squeeze on everyone around here, even those in the more affluent areas.

For sure I would have thought NY would have been #1. However being that I am from Chicago, I can definitely say that I am stressed. With sales taxes in Cook Country going up to 10% and for the fact that it is difficult to get a job in the city, it has been tough (at least for me). Though I do not drive, gas is very high as well, which depresses my BF. So to avoid the 10% tax increase, we could drive to neighboring areas outside of Cook County, however, you then get hit at the pump!!

lol.. Fiery- 42nd is acceptable!! I''m downtown, here it''s not!! I do the reverse commute and need to walk to Broadway to catch the subway. The financial district in the morning is a nightmare.. flooded with people all trying to get to the office. When one person stops, we all do as everyone''s walking single file in each direction. I''ve always wondered why people don''t just step off to the side of the street so they don''t block the rest of us?

I find NYC must less stressful than L.A.

Detroit doesn''t seem that stressful to me, and I love Chicago and San Fran. I''d like to see the formula behind this calculation--the only way it''s possible for L.A. not to be #1 is if weather is heavily weighted, haha.

I've been to L.A. few times and the only thing that stressed me was how far and spread out everything was. Like the address 41425 Sunset (just an example) would only be 2 blocks from 4325 Sunset Blvd. So I decided to walk what i thought were a few blocks. Turned out, I was waaay off.

Albuquerque should be on that list

It is IMPOSSIBLE to find work here.
I also have a friend moving to NY because here, if you are on a visa and got here on a plane, you can''t find a job at all...but if you''re mexican, and just walk illegally across the border, you can. It''s b.s.
