A newbie with more questions please.....

I''ve read so much information here and my head is spinning from trying to absorb them all in the past 48 hours or so. I am very grateful to have stumbled upon this site. So, my questions are:

I have said in my previous post that I am looking for a .95-1.25 carat. With consideration to pricing, I thought I can get away with a nice colorless H-I, SI2 since my smaller stone is an I, SI2 and is absolutely eye clean but my local jeweler said that the cert. system has relaxed a bit and are grading stones slightly higher than they really should be.

So, with that he suggested I go for a VS1 or SI1. Color wise, I was advised to go with a G if I''m going platinum. Price approximates are around $5500 for an H, SI1 and $6500 for a G, SI1. Both Ideal cut. Fair price or overpriced? I wanted to see and compare the colors but he did not have anything in store to show me. All he had were stones already set in yellow gold so he said you cannot really compare those. I wonder if he''s a member here????? You never know.

Does it really matter than much in picking at least a G color for platinum? I was also told that picking anything higher than G in platinum would make the stone look yellow. Should I just pick an 18K WG over platinum so I can go to an H, I to keep my price down or does everyone think it''s worth going up with platinum therefore going up in color?

Thank you so much!

There is a whole folder on J (and lower) colored stones in platinum that may answer your question.

Granted, the pics on the computer are not the same as seeing one of these stones in person, but it can definitely give you an idea.

I had to drop down to a J to get the size I wanted and I am perfectly thrilled with it. My setting is also platinum. If you look through the side you can see a bit of warmth but it is gorgeous all the same.

I think you need to provide a little more info on the diamonds in order to judge whether or not they are a fair price. Or, do a search at the top of the screen to see what is out there. That will give you an idea on price.

He''s BSing yuo a little. You can go pretty low and still do great in Plat. I have an H in plat. There are girls here with J''s in plat. And there''s no yellow.

You can go bigger if you go with the H color.

I keep hearing this "no H-K stones in platinum" line from B&M jewelers/salespeople. POPPYCOCK. There's a whole thread on here about J stones in platinum and a couple examples of lovely K's in platinum. If you like white metal, you like white metal. You shouldn't feel hemmed into buying a G stone if you like the look of H or I or J or even K (L, M, N ... vintage can be cool - also in platinum.)

ETA: I really, really suggest you look ELSEWHERE before decidng. You need to see H stones in platinum settings. It kinda sounds like he's talking a line of b.s. to get you to go up in color & clarity when there are kick ass lovely, ideal cut stones with lower ratings of both - HE JUST DOESN"T HAVE THEM.

Hi jellybean and Ame,

Thanks guys! I''ll have to find that J folder. I think I may just stick with an H to keep my price down a bit. I wasn''t so sure why anything higher than G can make it yellow. My I is in platinum prongs and they looked as white as it was when it was in 18K WG prongs. I guess I should have asked him why he thought it would look yellow in anything higher than G color. I sent an email to Whiteflash last night and I am patiently waiting for their response.

Jellybean, the price is supposedly for an AGS-000? Is that the correct term? Ideal cut 1.0 carat. Just a rough estimate and no specific details on any specific stone.

here''s the link to the j stones in plat. thread.

Although you may, for your own purposes, want the better color or clarity, staying the course with only going for an increase in size should be fine, especially as you''d been satisfied with what you had. But...do what deco says, look broadly enough so you can see for yourself.

Regards,

Thank you to everyone.

I will check out the J link. I think I will stay with an H though.

Regular guy, yes, I am satisfied with the cleanliness and color of what I currently have but I may go up on the clarity scale too as I may have just been lucky 14 years ago to get a GIA SI2 rating with it really being eye clean. I am learning so much here and I am grateful to everyone giving their opinions. I hope I hear back from whiteflash soon!

I have an EC VS1 color I stone in Plt. Face up it is SOOO white. It''s also white in most angles but there are a few angles with the right light where I can see light yellow. I am not sure if the step cut would show or hide color more than a princess but I am very happy with the stone. Color was last on our list. We were more concerned with the cut, clarity, length/width, and size.

Thank you. I just looked at the J link and I cannot believe how white those Js are!!! So many GORGEOUS rings here (drool, drool!) I am definitely for an ideal cut. I just want to see how high I can get in the color chart and still be very white and also go lower on the clarity chart with it still being eye clean. So, with it being ideal cut, would it be better to go H, SI1 or I, VS2?? I think I''m becoming more confused as there are so numerous possibilities/ potentials.

That guy was trying to convince you you got "lucky" with an S12. You don''t have to be "lucky" -- just "smart", which you already are by checking out a place like Pricescope! There are eyeclean SI1 & SI2s, you just have to know to look for them & keep the faith that they can be found.

I think generally princess & all brilliant cuts hide color more than stepcuts ... and color is visible the larger the size of stone also. That said, I picked a stepcut H in platinum, no less. Will let you know if I love it as much everyday as I loved it when I picked it out. (May be a while though :) ...)

Another question....

With a low setting and the type that has the setting wrapped around the bottom part of the diamond... would that slightly affect how brilliant the diamond would look because the light would not be able to pass through all sides of the stones as opposed to a high prong where you can see the diamond better therefore you''ll have more light return?

Thank you!

Thank you!

Light enters a diamond from the top, then bounces around inside before being leaving the stone, again through the top (at least that is the case for a well-cut stone). Therefore, it shouldn''t matter whether the pavilion, or sides of the diamonds, are exposed. The diamond should sparkle just the same. The only consideration would be if you would like to be able to see all angles of your stone.

I like H SI vs I VS...or I SI would be fine too! I love a good SI stone.
