So it has happened, as the vet predicted: the first of my pets has gotten sick. ;( Bella, our great dane x mastiff was up and down ALL NIGHT LONG last night. Inside, outside, inside, outside. I let her out every 30 minutes until 1:30, when I left her outside. The kittens woke me up as the sun was rising at 4:30, so it was a short night's sleep for me. :knockout:

Poor Bella is getting older, so it's been a bit rough on her system. It doesn't help one bit that it's nearly 40 degrees here (104 F). I have to work all day, she has to stay outside. She's got plenty of shade, but she's not a water drinker at the best of times (and pretending like ice cubes are treats doesn't work at all - she gives me the most condescending look for even trying). I worried about her all day, but she was fine - just hot. I didn't leave any food out for her because when dogs get the trots, they often recommend a 12 hour break with no new intake.

I did the neck skin check and it snapped back quickly, suggesting she wasn't dehydrated. Still, to prevent it from happening, I've done the old 'turkey baster full of water in the side of her mouth trick.' She really resents that. :nono: Too bad. For food I boiled up a cup of rice in about 4 cups of water with a plain chicken thigh, shredded. Made sure to leave lots and lots of water in it, a soup really. She ate/drank about half a bowl of that, and has only tried to go poo once tonight (not much left in her to come out).

She's sleeping now, poor thing. I can tell she feels rotten, just lethargic and sulky. I'll see how she's going tomorrow night - if another serving or two of chicken/rice/water doesn't bind her up, I'll be back to the vet on Saturday. :nono: Luckily she should be able to take the necessary antibiotics - the kittens weren't able to because the side effects were too severe for small, growing creatures. For adults dogs it's much safer. I'm hoping it doesn't get to that point though, hoping the tried and true home remedies get her hydrated and let the bugs work their way out of her system.

Oh poor Bella!!! Sending doggie dust. :(

oh no, poor Bella! I hope she bounces back after 12 - 24 hours are up.... You have DEFINITELY had your fill of 'poo' for the month of December! Yikes --- I hope its going to be over for you soon... every puppy and kitten hits the "recovery" bar and all runs smoothly from here on in.

Good luck - DUST DUST (WINTERY) DUST DUST

(that's to help cool you down - its snowing YET Again here - another 10 - 15cm coming...)

Oh no... sorry to hear. You must want for recovery to happen soon....

ETA: on a different note, I am more than happy to reschedule for tomorrow and meet you in the NY.

Greg, I'm going to have to text you tomorrow when it's a decent time to chat - it doesn't look like any of my emails/messages are getting through to you properly. :nono: Oh well, mobiles will save the day. :saint:

Oh yeccchh, Ginger, I hope everybody clears up quickly! Been there with the every-half-hour-outside nights, the deepest pits. You're a true lover, girl. Dust (use it to dry up the you-know-what!). :wavey:

Can you put a kiddie pool in the backyard so he can cool down in the water?

Oh I"m sorry Ginger! I was hoping this would be a happier post! I'm at least very glad that Bella seems to be doing better. My vet also recommends pumpkin (not pumkin pie filling but the pumpkin stuff that also comes in a can) when our dogs have non stop poop. I mix it in with rice and we see results right away.

Dust your way!

Sarahbear beat me to it, but I just have to second her pumpkin suggestion. I highly recommend pure organic pumpkin to aid digestion and get a firm stool. The dose is a tablespoon per ten pounds of body weight. It can also be frozen in a kong if your dog prefers it that way. Most dogs love pumpkin.

Yes, I've done the pumpkin thing in the past, but was specifically warned off doing it this time. The food must be very, very bland to prevent vomiting. If vomiting starts along with diarrhea, it'll be IV fluids time. :nono:

It was a rough night (again). I thought she was good and slept through the night. I woke up with her nails clicking on the tiles at 3 and knew she needed to go out. Got up, walked to the back door...what was that I just stepped in? Turned on the light - she had pooed all over our tiled living area. Like 6 times. Nothing like splattering, infective poo that you've just stepped in at 3 am. :knockout: So there I was, scrubbing the floor with 70% alcohol until 4 am. DH slept like a baby.

Called in to work, slept in til 7, then got up and bleached the floors again. The entire house smells like an operating theatre.

Booked her into a new vet, just around the corner, and was very happy with the service I got there. Our normal vet is an hour away -- too far for diarrhea, and seemingly getting to be too far for traveling with a geriatric dog. I think we may switch to this local one from now on. Got a cute young girl vet, very kind and attentive. She was happy with Bella's hydration levels, lack of temperature, and lack of abdominal pain, but not happy with the fact that there have been 2-3 drops of fresh blood in her poos now. That opens her up to sepsis, which is the real concern with Salmonella.

So, she's got a week of amox/clav antibiotics, a few days of pooper-stopper meds, and a strict water/rice/chicken only diet for at least 5 days. She had her first meds when we got home about 3 hours ago, ate a bowl of rice/chicken soup, and has been snoozing ever since.

Poor Bellaboo. I hope she starts feeling better soon. And I REALLY hope that no one else in the house gets it.

Ginger, please report in on Bella, it its not too much trouble for you - we've all been sending positive thoughts, prayers, and a ton of dust and hoping that everyone, from great to small, gets well and stays well... :saint:

Bella is definitely feeling better already. 4 doses - God bless antibiotics. I only gave her one dose of her poooper-stopper medicine on Friday, because I'm not sure if she's gone since then. If she has, it's been sneaky when I've been preparing her food and not looking out the window. She's been on rice/chicken/water only, and small amounts for a 53 kilo dog. Last night I fed her a tin of tuna, which she gobbled with much gusto. Up, walking around (despite the ankle she had surgery on a few years ago bothering her lately), no poo, no vomiting, and she was even wagging her tail last night. I think she's definitely on the mend.

I have been worried about having people over to our house though. We're hosting the family Christmas dinner on NYDay as SIL and her fam are coming over from Brisbane on NYE. The thought of having 5 children, from 8yo down to 5mo, and an 87 year old grandfather in a Salmonella-infected household was stressing me out. Thankfully, I did some serious shopping and managed to locate a Lysol-type product that will disinfect Salmonella on soft surfaces, not just deodorize. Now I can keep guests out of the carpeted rooms, treat all the upholstery, and bleach all of the hard surfaces. I think everyone will be fine. :))

I am very much hoping that I am currently looking over my shoulder at the receding worst week in the history of our household. Thank you ALL for your well wishes and prayers. I am exceedingly grateful to have the support of a wonderful community like PS.

Thank you to you, Ginger and DH, for being such AMAZING people, for taking care of all these little kittens and really wearing yourselves out in the process.

PS dust and prayers going your way.

Thanks again and BIG MASSIVE HUGS and KISSES.

May 2013 bring you all lots of good luck and good fortune, best of health to everyone/ every kitten.
