So, I inherited a 4.79 Blue Topaz when my grandmother (my mom''s mom) passed. She got it as a gift from her fellow co-workers at Kaiser Hospital. It is loose (and with all the paperwork). I want to make my Mom a RHR with it and need setting ideas...

Since it is so large, I was thinking of a 3-stone RHR with diamonds, etc. I also am unsure of the metal, although my mom tends to wear yellow gold more often.

The clinger is the budget (I am already sending her on a small trip during the time, mid-December) so I want to spend no more than $750 or so----

Any ideas?! Shoot some pics my way to help :) Please :) Halo? Larger side diamonds (obviously not large, large!)?
 
Fun project! Before we go about making it bigger, haloing, etc - what is your mom''s style - does she wear a lot of jewelry? Does she like lots of bling or is she more understated? I wouldn''t want to overshadow her ering - what is her ering style? Is that one also yellow gold? (presuming she wears an ering - if not then bling her out if it fits her style!)
 
Well, should used to be understated....but then she moved to Orange County and slowly (very slowly) has started wanting a bit more bling---

Her e-ring is reflective of the times (she has nearly a 1ct marquise in an 18kt yellow gold cathedral mounting). She wears both yellow gold and white metals....

I just noticed something when "playing" with the stone---it is very deep...I wonder what setting will work because of this? I prefer it not sit too high---

She has size 8.5 fingers---so it won''t look as big---

The more I thought about it, I may spend a little more to make the ring spectacular---but I would prefer to save a bit and get that trip for her....

I do have diamonds I could use in the setting, but they are small (.22 and .23)---
 
Great! Plenty safe blinging that size stone out as it sounds like we will be safe in doing so as she has become accustomed to the OC style!

I agree with Skippy - any pics so that we can see what the stone looks like? Maybe Knox will have some design ideas in budget. If I remember correctly you are UCLA Belle but currently located in the Northeast, right? (something in my head is saying that but I may have made it up)

I was in the Northeast- I moved back about a year ago (to Orange County)...
 
I suggest a super simple ring...solitaire...in a basket setting... yellow gold to match her other rings...this will show off the stone and keep way under budget.The larger the stone the simplier the setting.

I was thinking Katie Holmes inspired style split shank with a delicate halo - maybe in all yellow gold for her? You could cut way down on some of the diamonds to cut down on price. Or maybe use white topaz or sapphires?

 
:)-I love that setting....I am a little worried it might be too delicate----but I am going to go "jewelry shopping" this weekend to see if I can find a similar ring in-person. I have started sending out e-mails to get quotes on that setting (similar one rather) and a more traditional 3-stone....with trilliants maybe? Not sure----
