Moissy...do you regret it?

I have noticed recently that many of our favored jewelers here have started to offer moissanite ideal cut stones and various jewelry settings with them. I have jumped on the band wagon and ordered a pendant with an OEC moissanite from a beloved designer and am eagerly awaiting its completion.

Since placing my order, I have noticed many moissanites coming to the preloved market. Many are very recently purchased and it got me thinking.. why? I know that there are many personal/financial factors at play - but I have noticed a pattern. Are people disappointed with these stones once they have them IRL?
 
That's a good question. And why I am still hesitant about pulling the trigger...
 
For ME, if it cannot pass for a diamond 100%, then I am not really interested.
 
I see the moissanite market taking a hit when Lightbox comes out - certainly in the sizes Lightbox offers, but even in slightly larger ranges. The majority of moissanite consumers are looking for diamond substitutes - when actual diamond becomes available at "substitute" prices... even if it's perhaps a bit smaller than originally intended, or has different faceting...
 
Moissanite (for me) looks so much better than a diamond, and the options can become ridiculously addictive. You mean I can custom order a 3 carat cushion rose cut for the price of any decent solitaire setting? Whaaaaa....?

That's I think why so many end up on preloved. Why not? Wear it until the next big wish comes along! If you get tired of it or DSS kicks in you're not suddenly out $20,000 or frantically selling years of purchases :lol:
 
Maybe they want to try a bigger stone, different cut, different style. If they bought an OEC but now found a mine cut they have to have then they might sell the OEC to fund the new stone.

Or maybe they ordered too big a stone, not comfortable with the attention, too small, can't see the facets well enough. Maybe they gave it a try but decided it's not a diamond and can't measure up to or replace one.

I got a Moissy because getting an OEC diamond in the size I wanted was out of budget and then I also can worry less about it. If I lose it, I can easily get another, don't have to worry about inclusions or a certificate from a reputable lab, if it gets stolen it's not as a big a deal. Mine is a Harro which is not well liked but it works for me, however I am not trying to replicate a diamond either, I appreciate it for what it is with its own unique characteristics.
 
ditto to everything StephanieLynn said above and also moissanite varies in quality tremendously just like diamonds, so you may end up with one that is not quite what you expect. there are no places i know of where you can see them in person before deciding so you are taking a leap of faith based on photo/video. i think some people also buy them as a placeholder until they can get the diamond they want and then sell. i'd be more willing to buy if i could see them in person first myself tbh.

That was my thought. I have so many "cuts" that I love, it is not practical to buy actual diamonds. I was considering purchasing a large moissanite fun/travel ring, but I see so many coming back to the market, I am now on the fence about it
 
I love new settings and am fickle on what I like as was the case for setting my diamond. It doesn't make sense to spend $ on diamonds for new unique settings that will not be worn as much. My jewelry box would be quite empty if I had to limit myself. :mrgreen2: I am quite picky on cuts of Moissy though and you can get some bad ones.

I totally get that. I have so many designs that I really want and thought a moissy would be a great way to scratch that itch. Any cutters/brands that you recommend?

Do you find the double refraction to be a problem?
 
I don’t regret my choice but then It took me 5 years to decide to get a moissanite ring because I expected something exactly like a diamond for the price the US sellers were charging (even though it was 100-1000x cheaper than diamonds lol). I could finally let go of that thought when I found out much cheaper Chinese moissanite sellers. The platinum setting alone would cost more than the whole ring if I were to get it done in US.

I don't find it to be a problem for me but I don't have anything except OECs and one step cut. My RB cuts are small accent stones so I am not sure how larger ones would look IRL.

I have loved the AVCs and AVRs that I have seen from Jonathan and I would imagine his modern cuts are pretty as well. Some of the other well known vendors here are selling them and I would expect them to know a good cut from a bad one. I think if you wanted to roll the dice on some of the ones from China it could be a cost effective trial as they are much less expensive, especially since you don't know if you will like Moissy. But I wouldn't do it without video and lots of pics first. Over the years I have seen ones with terribly dark centers. My OECs are very well cut but are JKL in color since they are older ones from Charles & Colvard before the patent expired.

I should clarify that I am looking primarily at old cut type stones, if that makes any difference. I have an Astrid OEC pendant in production with CVB (not sure who she sources her moissys from), but she has a great eye so I am confident that it will be beautiful. I would love to get a large EC, I have been dying over all of the recent SMTB posts, but don't want to part with my current stones (first world problems - i know)
 
I will always prefer diamond. I'm speaking of OEC's in particular. I can't afford one of any real size, but my daughter has 2 beautiful smaller ones. I think I like the imperfections and historical value more than just the optics. I like old things. For earrings, I wouldn't care. Probably even for a pendant, although I have one I never wear because it just doesn't seem mind clean for me.

I didnt order a oec, but am waiting for my ring to be delivered today! Fingers crossed it looks good!
 
I think another reason we might see moissanite surfacing on loupetroop is that they might be 'older' moissanite that had a different color/cut to them but were great at the time they were purchased. In just a few short years moissanite has changed dramatically (I think). SO many more moissy options out there now! Better cuts, custom cuts, color options.... I think that could factor in to the rise in people selling some of their older moissanite?
 
Probably! I wouldnt buy one of the “ Off white” ones on ebay, and old moisanite was too yellow. The classic was a k or worse, even the forever line was not white enough. With the new d and e color stones and an ideal cut, I am willing to give one a try!

I think it would be fantastic! But, I agree. While it is far less of a financial hit as a diamond, it it still going to be an expensive piece of "costume jewelry". I imagine that it probably takes an even bigger hit in the resale market.
 
I have a cushion moissy from Jonathan, set in a CVB setting. It’s beautiful and unique in its own way. I still prefer diamonds over the moissy, it’s fun to rotate my wedding rings. Eternity, moissy cushion and then back to my original pear. I have moissy OEC earrings from Erica at Love Affair Diamonds and they are beautiful and white, they look just as nice as my diamond studs. I wear them when I travel as I don’t worry about losing them.
 
The old moissy - even the enhanced - had green tones. They've gotten better witn color, but moissy still gets an oxidation stain on some stones. I know that's one person's reason for switching to diamond, because it kept happening.

The OEC moissy that I had in my e-ring for 4 years didn't have any green at all (it was a forever brilliant color, probably J/K on the diamond scale), but it did get the stupid stain--which drove me absolutely insane. It looked like an oil slick and over time annoyed me more and more. That's why I was looking into the AVC moissy because I've heard that this doesn't happen on the newer stones. But in the end I splurged for a CBI :)
 
edit. @Octo2005 I will eventually (probably) sell my OEC, but not because I regret the purchase. I would have been 100% fine and happy with it in earrings or a pendant. It was only because it was my e-ring that I was looking at it all the time and I wear my rings all the time (except when working out), meaning it was getting dirty and the "oil slick" was happening more often. It doesn't mean that the stone wasn't beautiful or worth having, but if I were going to put a moissy in my e-ring, I would get new stock. For other projects, I wouldn't care.
 
I've tried moissy several times over the last couple years, even purchased one of the new H&A F1's, and I've sold or returned them all. I can't seem to get past the "mind clean" aspect that it's not really a diamond. I wish I could (and my husband does as well), as they are such an affordable way to get size/wear different styles.
 
I bought quite a few forever ones in the def colors..They look amazing in the round cut but the princess cuts don’t look like a true diamond princess cut. I bought a five stone forever one band and it looked amazing..but then my husband wanted to get me my 3/4 eternity from Brian Gavin..so I couldn’t turn that down. I put them next to each other and the forever ones looked really good right next to the diamonds. I did lend (really give) the five stone forever ones to my daughter in law. It’s also a uprong..I actually miss it! I bought bezel earrings and loved them too! I put them next to the diamonds and they sparkled like diamonds..so then I bought the square studs and pendant..I wanted to love them too but the cut was so off that it appeared like a shattered windshield..Between the two of them I spent around $1600..What a waste for me because they just didn’t sparkle as much and the cut made me nuts. My daughter in law thought I was crazy..She loved them so she’s getting the earrings for Christmas and the pendant for her birthday..I also give her and my son a check so I don’t usually give them something that expensive with it..but it made me happy that she loved them and it frees me up to buy the diamond princess cut studs. I know princess cut studs are not that in demand here but I love them...and I already have the round studs..so why not! I did think about Lightbox..but I’m afraid of the mind clean thing..so will just get a small princess cut diamond pair..My money is earmarked for a few other things so I’m going to just get a small pair. I would buy the round forever ones for the right hand and other jewelry..but I don’t try to make people believe they’re diamonds. I tell them they’re moissanite..and they’re surprised.
 
I have moissy earrings now because I am afraid of losing diamonds but for my e-Ring nothing but diamond will do. It’s a mind thing. I think moissy is ”cheap”. No argument, just MY feeling for myself.
 
I’m very interested to see how the newer premium stones (AV and the rest) wear over time. I’ve seen enough of them that I know I can live with the looks but the “oil slick” scares me, especially since I am most interested in them for earrings and my diamonds get gross, wouldn’t any potential “oil slick” be bad too? I wonder if the new stones will truly be resistant to that.
 
What is an oil slick?
 
I’ve got an original Charles and a Colvard Moissanite, rather yellowish, but I love it as a great fun ring. I’ve worn it off and on for years, no “sign of the oil slick”.
They don’t know if it’s reaction to “hard water” or other chemicals (like your hand lotion or hand soap) but it is removable with a silver cleaning cloth. That a cloth impregnated with mild abrasives that can remove tarnish from silver, gold or platinum items.
If you want a very sparkly gem that’s cheaper than diamond and will last better than a Cubic Zirconia, sure, a Moissanite can be that gem.
