IDEX Price Report for 1 May: Fancies Fall, Mixed Fortunes for Rounds

May 01, 22 by John Jeffay
Rounds

A more mixed picture than of late, ending months of near-blanket price rises. Goods over 3.0-ct still saw a raft of increases, albeit with some decreases, especially among 5.0-cts. Price drops dominated in goods under 0.80-cts. Among 0.80-cts-2.99-cts there was much activity and a near-even mix of prices rises and drops, with 1.00-1.24-cts dominated by price drops. 0.50cts-0.69cts goods saw drops among I+ and SI+. 0.70-cts-0.79-cts were more down than up. 0.80-cts-0.89-cts were evenly split, with rises among H+ and VS1+. 0.90-cts-0.99-cts saw little movement. 1.25-cts-2.99-cts were evenly mixed.

Highlighted changes

2.00-2.99 ct. H-K / IF-VS2 -2.5-5%, D-H / SI1-2 +.5-3.5%

5.00-5.99 ct. J-M / IF-VS2 +1-5%, D-E / VVS1-SI1 -.5-4%

Maybe price increases are reversing?

Am I reading this correctly? High color 5 ct+ fancies decreased but warmer J-M stones increased?

5.00-5.99 ct. J-M / IF-VS2 +1-5%,

Based on the article, yes.
I'm a bit skeptical of statistics...in general, and in this instance. Overall, I can feel prices moderating a bit.

Specific stones will always break rules....one way or the other....nicer stones commanding premiums and crappy stones being sold from weaker positions decreasing the specific price....

To soon to tell.
My opinion is:
The volume of stones at 5ct+ is low enough that one super nice stone that sells high or a not so nice one that sells low can move the average.

Great point Karl! It's like when they say people in a given country have gained weight on average....clearly, it doesn't apply to everyone specifically.
But we're both thinking of the extremes....
IN the common sizes such as 1-1.25cts there's a far larger sample size, more reliable statistically speaking.

How large do you think the sample size is for 5-5.99 ct? And how does IDEX get their data?

This is interesting. What about the prices for even larger fancies (in the 7+ct range)? I have a friend who wants to buy a large rock as an anniversary present and was advised by his jeweler to hold off unless it was urgent because prices were rising sharply (about a year ago). Have things started stabilising in that size range or is there no real way to tell?

That's a strong buy signal! :lol-2:

And that's before the market tanked but after bonds lost 10% so the buyer pool is shrinking a bit.

The Pricescope and RapNet info says about the same, with RapNet still falling

Not sure what current statistics show but I tend to look up over my horizon....
