mm vs ct??

Hi,

I see that alot of one carat stones are listed as 6.0 mm (or was it 6.5). I''m curious to know if 6.0 is typically a carat, even though I know that the stone can be cut to be deeper or more shallow? For instance, I saw a stone advertised as .8 carat but 6.0 mm.
