I love this series from (and now streaming), on Netflix.

Parts are goofy & over the top, but I LOVE something about this series, learning bits about another culture, and this series is chock full of it.
... Of course, not that everything made in and about a country is a true representation of that country/culture ... American examples: Dynasty, Dallas, and Housewives of X, Y, for Z.:roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll: (why don't we have a barf emoticon?)

@kenny, this looks interesting, but I don't have Netflix......
Because I refuse to pay for streaming services or TV. Imagine the money I'm saving!

Yes, of course!
Everyone is different when it comes to what's "worth" spending their money on.

There are zillions of things most are happy to spend $$$ on that I do not.
I rarely even push the lever to flush my toilet.
Instead, I flush by pouring in water I've recovered & saved in buckets from various uses in our home, like rinsing veges, and waiting for hot water to reach the faucet.

This is one of my all time favorite Netflix series. It started last year and I had hoped it would come back. I even love the intro music.

I'm watching another episode right now.
It's so relaxed, genuine, and homey ... like going back to a simpler time.
... maybe it's kinda a Japanese version of that American show, "Friends" that I've heard so much about, but never watched.

The chef at the "Midnight Diner" reminds me of a good therapist ... instead of saying much, just creating a safe space for others to open up and unload.

Those three best-friend women, 30-something regulars at the diner, keep complaining what sexist pigs the men are ... but of course nothing ever changes. :nono:

The regulars really have no back story and the viewer ( so far) knows little about the chef’s life. Their purpose is to react to the new patron’s story and to allow the story to flourish. Very indirect and makes the viewer experience the story at the same time as the others. Plus the little cooking lesson at the end of the program is really cool.

....they do do a month's free trial and you do get time to pull out before you pay the first bill
i signed up for Springsteen on Broadway and then i kelt paying for a year - the price dors seem to keep going up here but now we get it through a deal with Gary's internet and cell phone provider
you have nothing to loose taking the free trial, they do actually make alot of their own shows and its really interesting watching alot of the foreign content - they have subtitles

and if your stuck at home with time on your hands .....

I'm definitely going to check it out. Sounds like something I could get into. Since you are interested in cultural aspect of this series, I was wondering it you have watched Kim's Convenience? Also on Netflix. I watched all 4 seasons in one weekend! Fun sitcom about Korean immigrant family running a convenience store in Canada.

Can't wait to "get off work" today and start Midnight Diner!

I love this series on Netflix as well. I have to go back and revisit it.

Hubby and I went to visit Japan in 2016 and we tried to find him. We weren’t successful but we visited so many other places in the alleys of Tokyo and Hiroshima.

Thanks for the recommendation.
I'll check it out. :))

ETA: I just realized I misspelled diner in my threat title.
It has two 'n's.
I was a poor enough speller when I wasn't getting getting old. :nono:

I've watched all the seasons of this show! Absolutely LOVE this style of storytelling.

I watched the first 3 episodes last night. I really enjoyed it, and brought back some of my cultural heritage that I have largely forgotten. I'm actually a quarter Japanese, and was born in Yokohama (only been back to Japan 2x since childhood). My maternal grandma only spoke Japanese to us when we were babies. It was fun trying to understand what was being said without reading the English subtitles.

HI:

I'm gonna check it out.

cheers--Sharon
