Hi I was given my grandmother''s wedding ring and I know its old! It''s a miner''s cut and a large diamond set in platium.I read someones post regarding a miners cut diamond she got as well I was thinking about having it re set becuase it also has two think bands one with diamonds as well and it''s too much for me. I''m not sure though if I do have this re set the value would also be effected. I want to put up a photo of this ring and see if I can get any advise or opitions regarding the diamond. the size etc.. thanks

Would love to see pics of the diamond and the setting. Quite a few people here have reset their old mine cuts... and I don''t think it''s affected the value. Also... if it''s yours, and you aren''t wearing it now... and reseting it would make you wear it. That''s added value to me.

Use the marco function on the camera (little flower icon) for the pictures.

There will be little effect on total value to reset a diamond. Sure, the original mounting may be ruined, but usually they are more or less worn out after someone has used them for a several decades. We like old mountings, but many of them are now in poor condition anyway. If it is in mint condition, have a responsible jeweler carefully remove the main diamond and then sell the mounting. Ones with great craftsmanship and in fine condition do keep substantial value.

The value of a diamond will not be changed by resetting it. Making it a stone you''d like to wear creates value for you. If you have a diamond that you won''t use, then it is worth only its liquidation value and nothing in terms of giving you enjoyment and pleasure. So, don''t worry about using it. Enjoy it and make it work for you.

If the old cut is chipped, as many are, consider having it repaired to make it more durable. You might not want to fully recut it, but a repair job is a lot less costly and may save the stone from more serious damage.

Most cases the value shouldnt be effected..., but a picture will help.
Some "antique pieces are meant to stay in its original state...".

its worthwhile to double-check prior to dismantling...
