Some people here seem to have a talent for selecting the "right" metal for a particular stone's color. I'd like to know what you guys think would look best with:

An H

A K/L

An N/O

I *like* almost every color of diamond, especially in older cuts. I'd like to know what metal will make each color look its best.

Yes, I know people (and stones) vary. Just looking for opinions. :))

TIA. :wavey:

I'd choose platinum for almost any diamond unless I was creating an extra ring and wanted to have rose gold for an old cut stone in a lower color such as Haven's.

Yes, it was the N/O I was specifically thinking of - if it would look better in rose gold than platinum. I prefer platinum as a metal as well, and currently don't have any non-plat rings. What effect will the rose gold have on the yellow tint?

I agree with DS, for me personally platinum would work with any of those options and would normally be my first choice.

Rose and yellow gold can look great with N/O coloured Diamonds, if I'm using rose/yellow for a diamond ring I will always Rhodium plate the inside of the halo, bezel, or the inside of a claw basket before setting the diamond to stop any of the colour being drawn into the diamond, this is especially important on diamonds with chunky facets like emerald cuts or old cuts. (unless your trying to play up their colour)

Once the diamond is set you do not see the rhodium plating and it will never wear away because it doesn't rub on anything.

My goodness, Mike - I had never considered rhodium-ing the inside of another metal setting. I think that is an excellent example of what sort of thought you put into the details of your pieces. My next ring is going to be a very plain solitaire, but the next time I have a proper setting upgrade, I know where to go! :))

I agree with using Platinum.

I think you also need to consider which metal looks best on your hand. My original e-ring was platinum, and while I loved the ring itself, I hated the way it looked on my hand. (It looked amazing on my sister's hand, however. She has this wonderful tanned complexion, and I'm just pinky pale.)

I really thought I just had hideous hands until I put on my upgrade ring for the first time. My upgrade setting is 18K rose gold, and the rose gold looks so much better on my skin. I'll probably never buy another platinum ring, to be honest. They really just make my hands look so awful.

The other thing to consider with lower colored diamonds is that they don't all have the same tint. I originally thought my O-P had a yellow tint, this is something I just assumed because of its color grade. But after wearing it I realize it has a steely gray tint. (I had a suspicion of this, and then Dreamer pointed it out in a thread, and now it's completely obvious to me.) My goal was to play up the stone's warmth, so my jeweler set a yellow diamond beneath the culet, so that adds some lovely buttery color to it as well, but the stone itself is more gray than yellow. I think that will have an effect on how it looks with different metals, as well.

While I do not set out to do so, I do tan fairly easily and think I have a medium-dark complexion. I wear a platinum ering, an unplated white gold wedding ring, and my grandmother's wedding ring is yellow gold (it fits my pinky). So all I DON'T have covered is the rose gold! I do think the platinum suits me best though.
