My jeweler has a trade in, trade up program as long as we can spend the same amount that we originally spent (i.e. my setting was $1900, so I get a $1900 credit but I also have to spend $1900 as well for a total upgrade of $3800). Since I don''t have that cash on hand right now, I need some other options because I have recently had an allergic reaction to the Nickel in my white gold wedding rings.

Can you dip white gold in platinum or another metal? How much would that run and how can I find a jeweler who can do that? (My jeweler is in another state).

White gold is almost always plated with rhodium. How long have you had the rings? I am wondering if you are now having the problem because the rhodium is worn off. I am not sure whether replating it would help or not. But changing to platinum rings should solve the problem. And since platinum costs a lot more than white gold, you unfortunately won''t have trouble spending the extra money on new settings, once you are able to do that.

I have had the rings since April of 2004 - so about three years. I am looking for a quick fix for now - I am in law school, so we only have one income right now. I hate not wearing my rings. It just seems like this is a problem, and someone would have come up with a solution, even if temporary, other than buying a whole new setting.

Thanks for the help!

How long did you wear them before having the allergic reaction? Have you had the rhodium replated since you got the rings? I''d certainly go try that if the rings did not bother you the first year or so.
