Meniscus Tear in Knee

That is the same surgery type that the fellow suggested. Was the laparoscopic surgery "bad"? How long did the procedure take and were you completely out with general anesthesia? I was hoping to hear that the steroid shot would be the magic answer! The photo of the stretch really gives a great visual. Thank you so much for sharing and I am glad that you are doing well after your surgeries!

@kathley It was actually arthroscopic surgery, not laparoscopic. Surgery was very easy. Although, I tend to do very well with medical treatments. I was completely out with general anesthesia, but since the surgery was quick (30 minutes from what I recall), coming out of the anesthesia was easy with no lingering drowsiness.

Do you have full mobility now? I have tears in both knees that aren’t surgery worthy yet but I feel it’s only a matter of time.

@Piper70 Yes, I have full mobility with no pain. I wonder why you are considered not surgery worthy? I'd think that something that has caused you pain for years and limits mobility would be enough to warrant surgery. With my torn meniscuses, I could do most activities (run, jump, drive, etc.) but I could get off the floor easily or without pain, which was enough for my surgeon (Kaiser) to do the surgery.

I had my acl replaced and meniscus repaired arthroscopically in 1995. I was 37. Best decision ever. Anaesthesia was a spinal block. Back to sport in about 4 months. Full mobility and no pain.

If it’s hampering your lifestyle, do it.

I greatly appreciate you sharing this information and I would prefer a spinal block over general! I am happy you are doing well!

Absolutely! Spinal with light sedation. I started pt the next day. Actually had the other acl replaced about 7 months later. No pain in either knee, full mobility.

Do it!

Greg had a meniscus tear in each knee at different times In 1979 and 1980.
This was just at the start at arthroscopy surgery He had two surgeries and both were successful.

They were very different surgeries (1979 vs 1980) as the technology had greatly improved by 1980 so his second surgery was much easier and with an easier recovery.

Good luck @kathley the surgery now is so much better than it was decades ago. Wishing you a very successful surgery and smooth recovery!

I think I have adapted/dumbed down my activity to accommodate them so most of the time, I have minimal pain. But I would like to run again and do strength training ( just turned 54 and feeling muscle loss already ). I think I will just start doing stuff and if the knees act up, go back and get them evaluated again.

Hi missy! Thank you for your information. With improvements in technology over the years, it helps to lessen the anxiety when facing procedures! Thank you so much for your kind wishes and I am happy that Greg is doing well!

Thank you! And we are all rooting for you and thinking good thoughts for your full recovery. We are fortunate to live in this time because great strides have been made in this field. I am grateful because when I fractured my surgeon told me if I had gotten this same fracture 40 years ago I would have never walked again. Best wishes!
