"My Bad", or even "Social experiment gone awry!"
First off, I really appreciate the help I've gotten from pricescopers. It feels really strange knowing far more about diamonds then even the guys buying stones for resale!
To recap the sordid history:
1. Learn all about diamonds from pricescopers (Thanks! You really are knowledgable!)
2. Look at some stones from PS vendors... Great stones, decent prices, but what I wanted was pushing $10K, a bit over my budget.
3. Find a one-day sale on Amazon. Buy *three* "####. Also bought a ###.
4. Point pricescopers to the same deal while there is still inventory... Everyone is says "no.... to risky". That's o.k., some are bigger risk takers than others. Use an alias to post, as I was still looking at some PS vendor stones and I didn't want to burn my bridges.
5. Diamonds come in. WAY better than I hoped. They where all over 1 carat (spec allowed down to .95), one was a ###. Ideal-scoped and asset-scoped all stones. Had Denver Appraiser help me pick the BEST of the three. Sent it off to Gellin Abaci for a gorgeous setting. Pricescopers took at pictures of all the stones, and give favorable feedback on all but the $1,300 IGI stone.
6. O.K., now here is where the trouble starts! Where can you sell quality diamonds? Nowhere, really! Dealers or wholesalers will give you "dump" value, about $4,200 on the AGS stones, $2,800 on the IGI stone. Dump the IGI stone. Up $1,400. Ebay the ####
7. Put the second stone on ebay. Link knowlegable PS'ers (also under an alias, yes to try and 1) sell the stone, and 2) give PS'ers an opportunity to buy a quality diamond cheap). Everybody disses the same exact stone they liked when the saw it before... Interesting! Sold for $5,500. Again, I know that the new owner got a great stone at a far lower price than any other venue, ### Hell, I'll regret selling them for that price when I want to buy my wife a pair of 1 carat studs sometime down the line.
So... What have we learned.
A. PFB is a devious little shit posting under multiple aliases. Tries to circumvent PS no sale policy to (honestly) give PS'ers an opportnity to buy what I still consider to be a quality diamond and a discount price (mea culpa).
B. Pricescopers are *really* risk adverse. They didn't like the Amazon deal when they had the opportunity to buy AGS 000 stones for a "too good to be true" price. *Equally* risk adverse about buying ebay stones.
C. Pricescopers are feverently loyal to PS vendors. (For the record, I had nothing but great experiences with GOG and WF!) and VERY suspicious of any individual selling stones!
D. Pricescopers for some reason think it is wrong for me to sell a diamond that has a low-retail value of $7,000 for $6,000 (dump value ~$4,500) when I bought it for $3,000. Hmmm. I *was* the one willing to charge fifteen grand worth of diamonds on my credit card without really knowing what I was going to get!
So, at any rate, my fiance LOVES her new rock in her new setting. It does have amazing fire and brilliance (just a little better than the other two
You can be sure I'll keep my eyes open for another Amazon blowout
Peace-
