I was thinking about your thread the other day on your security deposit and the possibly fake email, etc. and wondered if you had any update?

We recently moved out of an apartment in VA, and I'm waiting to see how much of our security deposit will be returned, and it's been a month. VA law gives the landlord 45 days to contact the tenant, so I've still go to be patient, but every time MY missing security deposit crosses my mind, I think of you!

Sorry I haven't replied till now. Since moving, I haven't been spending very much time online.

What ended up happening is I told her that if she gave me $1000 back, that I would drop the potential claim and she agreed. The thing is she again sent me a forward after we had everything settled and it was clear at that point that the previous forward she sent was fraudulent. I wasn't out to seek revenge unless it came down to her not co-operating. . .the yard did need some clean-up.

Oh, also, I drove by the house in middle of everything and she had had the yard worked on before getting a second bid so how can that figure have even been accurate. But, I dropped it. . .I do think the amount we got back was appropriate.

Hope all goes well with your deposit. How much was it? I've found that with the smaller deposits (like the $400 ones) they rarely give anything back. . .it's those big ones (like my $1800 one) where *something* has to be given back!

Glad you got it resolved fairly without all the hassle of a lawsuit!

Ours was for $1400, so I am hoping to get at least some of that back. We had also paid a non-refundable pet deposit of $300.

At our last apartment, they offered this thing called "Sure Deposit" where you paid $250 non-refundable, but they couldn't charge you anything additional when you moved out. It was the best thing...I had no problem paying $250 to not have to worry about walk-throughs and all that.
