I’m looking to purchase a new mattress. I’m ashamed to admit I haven’t purchased a new one for a very very long time. I’ve been meaning to purchase one for the past two years and kept putting it off. Then with the selling of our house I put it off again BC I figured I would just buy one once we settled in. Well we’ve been here now for two months and it’s time!

I am a back and side sleeper and I do suffer from lower back pain and occasional hip pain. I also have heartburn and suffer occasionally from reflux. The past year I’ve really had some rough nights on my old mattress. I am 5’3” and about 128lbs if that makes any difference.

I'm pretty much open to any budget so any recommendations would be helpful and explanations as well.
Since all the mattress stores are closed I can’t really test anything out so I’m hoping I can get real first hand experiences from you guys.

Natural latex mattress. I bought my from sleepez.com. You pick it out and it delivers in a box. You choose your layers (xtra firm, firm, medium, soft) and configure them how you want. The key is giving your body the support it needs to align your spine and then the right amount of plushness to alleviate pressure points (shoulders, hips).

You can rearrange your layers any time to meet new needs/comfort. And if you get a queen or a king, you can choose split sides, so your partner can have different layers/configurations to suit their needs.

I am 5'3" and weigh more than you do. I have broad shoulders and hips, so my pressure points were killing me on our Tempurpedic. I hated that thing. I cannot tell you the difference in how much better I sleep on our latex mattress. I got firm (bottom)/medium (middle)/soft (top) with a wool cover (1.5 inch of wool).

I have switched it to firm/med/med at times and my husband has also switched up his layers. He said none of this matters but he was sleeping terribly when I stole one of his layers for my side... when I switched it back and layered it a little firmer for him, he slept like a baby. Same with me, I was sleeping great and then my pressure points had me tossing and turning for a while. I switched them up and slept better. I started to wake up a couple of times a few months later so I switched them back and slept great again.

In other words, it's nice to have that flexibility. And if down the road you find you consistently need something else (softer, firmer) you just buy a layer, not a whole new mattress.

I have a latex sensitivity. I was concerned about this but in doing research discovered it's not an issue. And it hasn't been.

There is a non-profit forum for learning about mattresses. It's 'underground' ;)2 if you care to google. Kind of the PS of mattresses. :D

PS - when I say choose your layers, you can choose firm/med/med, xtra firm/firm/soft, firm/soft/soft.... the combinations are may. And then you can layer them however you want. For instance I chose firm/med/soft but I have tried every combo (firm/soft/med, soft/firm/med, soft/med/firm, and I stole from my husband to have firm/med/med). I did have a couple of stores that sell latex mattresses near me which allowed me to try them.

There is a difference in feel from dunlop latex to talalay latex. You 'sink in' a little more with dunlop (but nothing like foam or Tempurpedic) and Talalay pushes back on you a little more. It is said that Talalay feels softer, but at first I felt like it was harder, pushing back on me. I actually ended up with talalay and I am very, very happy.

The company I recommended is amazing. Family owned, the owner calls you to confirm your order. If you have any questions or want some help choosing, he's fantastic. Prices are very good, you can find some stores/online stores that charge an arm and a leg for latex but his manufacture and quality is right up there and he doesn't overcharge for it.

The Purple mattress is awesome. Better than foam and latex by far. There are a lot of mattress reviews if you Google and on youtube that compare mattreses. We bought a Purple 3 months ago and love it. Bought a second one for the guest room.

Thank you all for the recommendations so far. I worked the past two nights so I’ve been sleeping all day today but I will definitely look into the recommendations here.

I switched to a talalay latex pillow several years back and love it! Are you able to provide me with the name of the company you purchased your mattress from?
