we''re working on decorating our guest bedrooms. i''m looking at a couple of PB beddings and was wondering if i should go the duvet route or the matelasse route. anyone perfer one over the other? why?

i think a duvet over a big puffy comforter looks really comfy and inviting. the matelasse coverlets do look inviting but in a different way. i guess it would depend more on the comfort as far as climate than looks though.

The matelasse looks beautiful on a bed if you are in a warm area. A Duvet is nice if it is often cold since I put down in the duvet.

I think both are easy to take care of but it all depends on the temp where you live. Happy bedding hunting

Eta: I agree w/my friend Belle

I like beds with both (together)

guess that doesn''t help you much!

I agree with Tacori.

I love the poofyness of duvets as well as the look of matelasses (is that really a word? It made me giggle.)

Which ones are you considering? What wall color do the guest rooms have?

i''d get the white. walls are a light soft brownish beige - benjamin moore''s stone house.
we live in louisiana so cold isn''t a huge factor.

I think you can do both. A matlesse cover would be more decorative to me, or possibly summer weight with a sheet, while down for me is not as summery. The down I have on my bed, in order to be warm enough for the winter is simply too much weight on us in the summer. I like the idea of the matlesse covering on the bottom of the bed as an accent...

I love them both, but for a guest room I prefer the matelasse since it won''t be used too often. I have a Waverly matelasse coverlet and shams with embroidered palm trees that I love and don''t want to ruin so I save it for guests or just use it in the summer. Otherwise I use a comforter set I found on the cheap from a dept. store in the same color scheme.

I agree with Tacori and zoe...A matelasse in the summertime, and a duvet folded at the end of the bed in the winter! Yum!

regardless of which i''ll get, i was planning on having a coverlet folded at the end of the bed.
i guess my main concern is having the duvet not look like a bundled mess. i''ve never had a duvet/duvet cover, so i wasn''t sure how neat it looked b/c of the possibility of shifting & movement with the inner piece.

That color sounds wonderful!

I prefer the matelasse. I just think there''s something very rich and luxurious about it. I might have a tendency to go to Restoration Hardware and see if the Silver Sage or the blue (is it called Beach? or Boat? -- can''t remember) would go with that lovely stone color. I like their linens a lot.

Sounds like fun!

hi! i have had both. i prefer the matelasse coverlet as i found shifting a problem and i am a neat freak. i have not looked at the specific pb bedding you are considering but both are probably lovely just a personal preference.

I love both, so I put both on my bed. I have the matelasse coverlet over the entire bed and a duvet with a lightweight comforter inside folded in half at the end of the bed. I didn''t put the duvet covering the bed because they seem to get messy looking.

i agree. i LOVE rh. but, i think we're more likely to buy bedding from there for our master bedroom instead of our guest bedroom.

and this isn't directed to you, but i meant to say matelasse duvet vs. matelasse coverlet. either way we're looking at matelasse.
i couldn't go back to edit my original post once i found the mistake. whoops.

Ohhhhhh, I was thinking matelasse coverlet vs. plain cotton duvet!!! In that case I say matelasse coverlet without a duvet underneath. I prefer a cleaner look. My girlfriend has a matelasse coverlet with a comforter underneath and it always looks messy. It would drive me nuts.

Right, on our bed we have a striped duvet and then a solid green coverlet folded at the end. The Euro shams are the same as the coverlet, then 2 regular shams with the stripes and a long green velvet pillow. Ours was from pottery barn too but I believe it is no longer sold. I like the look and easy care of a duvet (easier to wash the cover then stuff the whole comforter in my washer) put the elegance and clean lines of the coverlet. Combined, for me, it is a perfect look.

ETA: OHHHHH.....I just saw that no matter what they will both be duvets! I have never seen a matelasse duvet IRL so I am not sure.

ooooooohhhh....okay
with that info, i vote coverlet for sure. for me, ''matelasse'' and ''duvet'' don''t really go together (as one). a matelasse coverlet looks good as an accent to a bed with a nice duvet but i don''t think it looks good as a duvet.

i''m starting to feel like my response should be posted in the ''weird little rulezzzz'' thread!

I love the matelasse coverlets. In fact, I had been wanting one ever since we stayed in a bed and breakfast in Charleston, SC last year. I had seen a bunch of cheap looking ones online but I don''t like buying when I can''t touch it. I finally found one at Macy''s in their Yves Delorme store. The thing I like about this one is, in addition to looking very pretty, it also feels wonderful to the touch, which is very important to me. It was pricey but I was able to get a good discount.

what is the difference betwen coverlet and duvet? I know what a duvet is but not coverlet.

a quilt.

I would do the coverlet and since you said it was warm. I think they are nice and I slept w/one recently and they are perfect for warm weather. I think the duvet would take away from the elegant look of the quilt. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with Skippy... Actually, since you''re in a warmer climate, the coverlet will be perfect and will lay flat so you will see the patterns more clearly. If you do a matelasse duvet cover it will likely be lumpy looking as that''s what duvets do. But, I wouldn''t hesitate to get a plain cotton or sateen duvet cover and fold it over at the foot of the bed in the winter time. That would look lovely and you''d still see the covelet and its patterns.

I''m on the market for matelasse and have been looking for one I *love* for several years.... I don''t like all of the designs... anyway it would be for our bed as a summer cover. To me they are a summer blanket. We have a duvet as well for our down comforter and that is great for winter. I think it all depends on whether you want to provide something lighter in the summer or something heavier in the winter.... if you live somewhere always warm I''d do the blanket and have some additional blankets for layering in rare cool times.... if you live somewhere always cool I''d do the duvet and have a light blanket for rare warm times. Consider the time of year you entertain the most guests.... layering lots of light blankets topped by the matelasse could be a lot of fun to decorate with, but soft fluffy down comforters sure are cozy!
