*Matching* diamonds...

Lets say I have an ideal cut .80ct RB and I am interested in getting side stones around .30ct each to make a three-stone ring. Let''s also assume that for various reasons, I would be selecting the side stones without having the center stone in my hot little hand at the time. If I choose sides that are similar color to my center stone, are also ideal cut, and make sure that their ideal scope images look similar/the same as my center stone, could I be fairly certian that these side stones would visually "match" the center stone?

You would be fine if they are well cut stones. Not sure what vendor you will be buying from but when I was buying from WF, clicked on the matching stone and they gave me options closest to that stone. If I look at my studs with my center stone they look fine.

I agree. You''ll be fine. You don''t even have to look at the idealscope images, IMO. The setting I got for my gf''s engagement ring came with two side stones of 0.2ct each and they were not a factor at all in choosing my center stone, which happens to be a 0.81ct. They are just there to look nice and give it a little something extra, but the main focus was always the center stone. If you match color and clarity and they are a good cut, you''ll be fine. By the way, you don''t even need to match color. My sides are G and the center is a D and it looks great. Only if you stare at it long enough in just the right light can you tell the difference, but since the sides are a good cut, they can mask the G a bit.

Thanks Skippers! I wouldn''t feel any doubts about "matching" if the sides were also AGS, but they would be certed by the most common Canadian lab (Gemscan) so I would need to rely more heavily on using my idealscope to "test" the ideal label, if you know what I mean... it is unlikely I could get the full numbers on the stones from the source I would be using, but I am stuck with this source since I would be trading in some pre-PS purchases.

Hopefully someone like Garry can let me know whether two stones that looks similar through the ideal scope will also be fairly well matched to the naked eye...
