Mary Tyler Moore, whose witty and graceful performances on two top-rated television shows in the 1960s and ’70s helped define a new vision of American womanhood, died on Wednesday in Greenwich, Conn. She was 80.

Her death, at Greenwich Hospital, was confirmed by the family. The cause was pneumonia. A family member said Ms. Moore had been removed from a respirator on Tuesday night. She had had Type 1 diabetes since her early 30s.

Ms. Moore faced more than her share of private sorrow, and she went on to more serious fare, including an Oscar-nominated role in the 1980 film “Ordinary People” as a frosty, resentful mother whose son has died. But she was most indelibly known as the incomparably spunky Mary Richards on the CBS hit sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Broadcast from 1970 to 1977, it was produced by both Ms. Moore and her second husband, the CBS executive Grant Tinker, who died on Nov. 28.

At least a decade before the twin figures of the harried working woman and the neurotic, unwed 30-something became media preoccupations, Ms. Moore’s portrayal — for which she won four of her seven Emmy Awards — expressed both the exuberance and the melancholy of the single career woman who could plot her own course without reference to cultural archetypes.

The show, and her portrayal of Mary as a sisterly presence in the office,as well as a source of ingenuity and humor, was a balm to widespread anxieties about women in the work force.

It modeled a productive style of coed collegiality, with Ms. Moore teasing out the various ironies known to any smart woman trying to keep from cracking up in a world of scowling male bosses and preening male soloists.

“Mary Tyler Moore became a feminist icon as Mary Richards,” Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, the author of “Mary and Lou and Rhoda and Ted: And All the Brilliant Minds Who Made The Mary Tyler Moore Show a Classic,” said.

Very sad news :( What an icon!

Yes she was lovedogs. I grew up with her show and loved it and the life she portrayed as a single career woman. It was one of my favorite shows ever. And the theme song. Love the theme song.

We have lost so many remarkable people lately.

May she rest in peace.

How sad! I grew up with her on the Dick Van Dyke show and the Mary Tyler Moore show. She portrayed a funny, beautiful, strong and independent women who was a wonderful role model for my generation of girls coming up in the '60s and '70s. Thank you Mary, RIP

Just saw this on FB. So sad, she was a wonderful actress and I loved her show. She was an inspiration.

Oh that's sad... :(sad

She was such a part of my early years and her show, along with Marlo Thomas's, was truly groundbreaking for women. She was also a long-time advocate for diabetes research and an excellent role model for those, like my niece, who have Type I diabetes. Bye, MTM. You will be missed.

My mom and I watched it together even though I grew up after it was on TV. We loved watching reruns of that together, and always sang along to the theme song!

Missy - thank you for sharing. I loved Mary Tyler Moore. I grew up watching her. The Mary Richards character was iconic. The thing that impressed me the most about her character portrayal was how she was always kind and generous but also a strong and determined woman.

I loved That Girl with Marlo Thomas too. I had the record Free to be You and Me. Very catchy music (at least for a young kid).

RIP MTM.

Thanks Poodles4me. I felt the same way. She played such a strong independent woman who was generous and kind too. A lovely person all around. And I think she was like that IRL too judging by the causes she supported.

She did so much to raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes as well as funding for research. Her love of animals was well known. I remember reading a story about when they made the intro for some of the later seasons of the show. It shows her grocery shopping and she makes a face and tosses a package of meat into the cart. It said it was her subtle way of showing how she felt as she was a vegetarian.

I hope none of you mind but I would like to share a little story with you. I remember seeing the Mary Tyler Moore Show for the first time with my older sister. We were in the basement wanting to watch something light hearted while our parents watched the news upstairs. We came across a listing for the MTM show. We had never heard of it and thought it was a typo and it must have been an old Dick Van Dyke re-run. We turned it on and from the moment she threw her hat in the air we were mesmerized and hooked on the show. It was such a special bonding moment for me. I idolized my older sister. She had just started working and was a career woman just like Mary. She even looked a bit like Mary. Fast forward - my sister had moved to a different province, and I had been in the workforce for many years. I attended a fundraiser and one of the silent auction items was a script for "Chuckles Bites the Dust". It was signed by Mary herself (at least that's what was claimed :wink2: ). I was the high bidder as I was determined to get it for a present for my sister. As it turns out, she didn't want it and didn't even acknowledge the time we spent watching the show together. It hurt at the time but I still have my script and it transports me back in time to a special moment between two siblings. Thank you Mary Tyler Moore!

RIP Laura! I loved the Dick VanDyke show as a child and will miss her .

Watched many a reruns...may she rest in peace.

How sad :(( I loved her shows and what a wonderful advocate she was for animals. I will miss her

Oh no!
I just loved Mary. What an inspiration.
The "Chuckles the Clown" episode was legendary. Poodles, I am so jealous that you have that script!!!

She lived in that awesome Victorian with the sunken living room, and that cool pull-out bed. I wanted to live there, too.

Me too DS. She was sort of my idol growing up because I admired her spunk and spirit and determination and also the fact that she was such a wonderful and warm person. I wish there were more shows now like the MTM show.

Poodles, thank you for sharing this story with us and though your sister didn't appreciate that gift I know many of us would have loved it and I am glad you still have it to cherish and enjoy.

Sharing the theme song. What I loved what how they changed the ending of the song after the first season (I think it was after the first season) from "you might just make it after all" to "you're gonna make it after all!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L218XwnsUzs

Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it's you girl, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it

Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all

How will you make it on your own?
This world is awfully big, girl this time you're all alone
But it's time you started living
It's time you let someone else do some giving

Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all

OK found season 1 theme song.

Haha diamonds is the first word of this theme song. I definitely don't remember that.
In fact I don't remember anything about this theme song. It's no MTM theme song but still a fun show if my memory is right.

Lastly here's The Dick Van Dyke show sung with Dick Van Dyke singing. I don't even know if I knew it had lyrics as I don't think they were used in the opening of the show or at least I don't remember them.

Love it!

HE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW THEME SONG
(Music by Earle Hagen / Lyrics by Morey Amsterdam)
Dick Van Dyke

So you think that you've got troubles?
Well, trouble's a bubble,
So tell old Mr. Trouble to "Get lost!".

Why not hold your head up high and,
Stop cryin', start tryin',
And don't forget to keep your fingers crossed.

When you find the joy of livin'
Is lovin' and givin'
You'll be there when the winning dice are tossed.

A smile is just a frown that's turned upside down,
So smile, and that frown will defrost.
And don't forget to keep your fingers crossed!
