I did a search to try to help me decide between 3-prong martini settings and 4-prong basket. Most people seem to love the martini settings. However, there were some who complained that it stretched their holes and they actually changed the earrings out to basket settings. Since I have sensitive skin and am having trouble with my re-pierced ears healing, maybe baskets would be safer choice?
I asked at WF and was told the martinis have more of an angle to the design and therefore may tilt or droop as compared to the baskets.

Postings here indicate that baskets droop more?

I''m hoping that whichever ones I end up getting the large plastic disc on the back will stabilize them.

Advice?
Thanks!

if you put them in too tight or leave them in 100% of the time I could see this. It makes a star shaped dent in my ear when I take them out. But I''ve been taking mine out more than I used to adn it''s fine - it''s nothing permanent in my experience.

That happened to me. I have 1+ ct each studs ,and they hurt and made my piercings sore after only a few hours. I had mine put in 4 prong raised baskets with very delicate prongs and am very pleased.

It''s a very personal experience; many people here have martinis and have no issues. You might have to go with what you like best and then switch if it''s a problem. The switch cost me about $100 (14K WG).

I have sensitive ears and I wear a 4-prong basket style in a screw back. I am very happy with mine and don't have any problems with them. I wear them everyday, but I do take them out at night before going to bed. I find that my ears tend to need a break and get a little "upset" if I leave them in overnight. Also, mine are a little over 3/4 ctw, so I'm not sure how a larger stud might change things. I also clean mine daily, not only to keep the sparkle, but to also get rid of any yucky stuff that could build up and irritate my ears.

I have both martinis (.50) and regular baskets (.30). The martinis are tapered at the bottom which allows a bit more earring stem to be taken up by your earlobe rather than sitting right on top of your earlobe skin as a basket will. My martinis sit closer to my ears and tip less than the smaller basket setting ones. Meaning I like the martinis A LOT more.

No, it will not permanently stretch your earring hole. HOWEVER, as you say you have healing earring holes, this is a different story. Actually, I''d just stay with the tiniest studs till they heal up Totally. Totally.

Oh, and look into something called a jumbo back or a mega back. It''s about 3X the size of a regular back. I think a company called "Earring Doctor" has them. Try a Google search for Earring Doctor. I do these plus the round plastic circle and it works Great.

I recently had my YG baskets reset into WG martinis. They have the three prongs but look like baskets at the bottom instead of the other style of martinis. My jeweler said that they have recently switched to these settings instead of the others because of some complaints and so far I have had no problems.

Interesting. The general concensus from the board is the opposite.

I''ve had both, with roughly a half carat in each, and hands down like the martini''s best.

As for stretching, I don''t push mine that close to my ear, so I haven''t experienced that.

the jumbo back for platinum from WF costs additional $280...so I''m hoping the plastic disc will stabilize the earrings.....if that doesn''t work, I may see if I can get some gold jumbo backs from a local jeweler. I''m having trouble with metals since my ears were repierced but I really don''t want to spend $280 for backs

Why not look at Earring Doctor and see what materials they have it in? They may be cheaper.

WF will give me a plastic disc that goes onto the post and then you put your back on. Looks like it may serve the same purpose as what the earring doctor is selling. But I''m keeping the Earring Doctor website info just in case. Thanks for your help! Now I still have to decide between martine and 4-prong basket.

I agree with Ellen and her pointing out the opposite. The basket just sits on the skin...the larger the carat the fuller the basket...tisket tasket the basket is drooping.

The martini...places it''s stem into the ear piercing hole so it is gently stirred not shaken...and not droopy. It would droop on a delicate skinny lobe, wouldn''t it? I can see how the hole size could increase though. Especially if those who were complaining had large stones.

What is your targeted carat size? Wouldn''t the weight have a factor in it?

And I wonder if you were able to contact those who complained and ask the size of the stones...and the shape of their lobes. You know skinny weaklings or fleshy full

mine will be approx 80 points each ear....will try to find thread again with complaint about stretching.....I went to jeweler at lunch today...the only martinis they had were about 3 ctw. I tried them on and also a pair of 4-prongs that were about 2ctw. The 3ctw were too big, hung too low on my ear and were screwbacks. The baskets when I used the large backs on them sat OK. Wish they had something more comparable to what I''m getting for me to try. Looks-wise I think I''d be OK with either style...most people here seem to prefer martinis but most of what I''ve seen IRL is baskets....hard call to make....thanks for your help

I have worn my 2.5 carat total weight studs in three prong martini settings almost daily for two years now. I put them on very tight to the ear and I have had no problems with the holes stretching. Of course I do take them off at night. They sit up very nicely on the lobe with no drooping and I would never go back to a four prong basket setting. Mine just have regular push backs.

I have no idea what size studs you are contemplating buying, but my .75 cts. each in baskets do not droop at all, and that is with the regular back WF sells. Since they have a flat bottom and sit flat agaist the ear, they are not likely to droop. I do not need the plastic discs. I have not yet had martini settings, so I really can''t comment on those. I''d be more inclined to try martini settings in small size stones. I doubt there would be a problem with the ear holes with smaller stones.
