Out of frustration for my seemingly futile cushion search, I thought I’d call Harry Winston and Martin Katz to see whether I could get the design I wanted pre-made, without having to go through the agony of a cushion quest. To my dismay, I cannot on my budget, thus the search continues. A 1.08 carat cushion solitaire at Harry Winston, no sidestones will run you about $18,000. Martin Katz's LA studio had a 1.09 D colored cushion solitaire in stock for a hefty $22,000 - not sure if that was one of his infamous mircropave beauties, but one would hope so, given the price point... Wowzers! In both cases, the salespeople were quite nice and Martin Katz's salesperson was kind enough to share that they set their e-rings with old mine brilliants and the modern cushion brilliants (the 1.09 was a modern cushion).

Why don''t you check w/Engagement Rings Direct; people have posted beautiful halo cushions that look very similar.

I did try Mark. He was great - but I never could get a good visual of the stone he found for me and it was a G color, which wasn't ultimately what I wanted. I didn't want to go to the time and expense of having it sent to an appraiser since I'd pretty much determined that I'm color sensitive and am comfortable in the the D-E-F range. Incidentally, maybe I'm making this more difficult than I need to. The attached photo (Martin Katz's cushion) is the cut that I'm looking for. Is there any chance of this not being an old mine style cushion brilliant??? If it's not, it would make my search so much easier and allow me to broaden my search to the modern cushion brilliants...

Looks like a modern interpretation of an older cushion to me. For old, the culet seems too small, the lower halves too long, and the corners a bit squarish. For $18-22K on this you're buying a piece of high-end jewelry not a stone. I hear you about color. For 1ct cushions like this, I could easily see color in some Fs. Take a look here at the cushions, I think some will look familiar.

Mmmmm. Yummy cushions on that site. That''s a great resource!
