I recently purchased a 1.81 EGL certified loose marquise. 12.22 x 6.5x3.77mm. Depth 58%, Table 57%, crown 14.6%, pavillion 33.4%, medium girdle, culet - none, polish - good, symmetry - good, clairty SI3, Color - H, Fluorescence - faint. Two small black spots I can barely see....Paid $9250....Thinking now it was too much....the spots, ever so slight are driving me crazy....just wondering if this was a mistake!

To me it seems that this (given weight and price) should have been either H-VS2 or D-SI3. It could well be that the cut of your piece makes it a particularly attractive one, however, it seems that the seller felt strongly about the quality of his stone (and / or your expectations about price) and charged... a bounty.

Is there anything you can do about this? Can you at least approach the seller to change the stone?

Hello. There are a few problems with this stone:
1) the price: it's OVERLY expensive --with a little of research you could get a 3ct with the same specs on the internet
2) the cut: the pavilion is shallow, even for a marquise. I'd like to see at least a 37-38%.
Can you return it, exchange it or upgrade it?

About those cut parameters... While the cut parameters for fancy shapes (Marq included) are rather loose and buyer's taste the main judge, there are some general standards one may use as guidance. Such a (widely accepted) set is the AGA's: HERE According to them, yours is a top, cut (really in the best cathegory). Ok, but this is not worth 50% premium! Your 58% depth is borderline for a round diamond, but surely mainstream for a marquise and surely not an abolute detraction. Of course, personal preferences are a whole different matter, and any cuting standard for these shapes does allow plenty of room for choice.

Thank you for your comments...I think the jeweler would do something about this....I was purchased from Diamonds International....does anyone have any knowledge of them? What should have been a ballpark price for the stone I got? Should I have another appraisal done so that I have additional info to present to the jeweler? I was really looking for a 3 carat stone or larger.

Depending on the accuracy of the grading, I would say no more than $5K.
