Hello all
First I want to thank you all for the help the topics have provided me as I have been a lurker over the last year or so. Been in a 4yr relationship and have to wait til she gets near the end of college to propose, but I've learned enough on these forums to know exactly what I want when that time comes, so I thank you for that.

My question is not for me, however. My roommate is planning on popping the question in about a month and has been scouring for a ring. Having frequented these forums and the gog page for a while, I offered to help.
Here's what he's looking for:
Marquise cut, 1.3-1.5ct, and a trillian ring (yellow gold)
He's been looking to find one locally prior to scouring the internet. We go to school in Pittsburgh and decided to check out Orr's in Squirrel Hill, Henne's in Shadyside, and Casa D'oro in Cranberry. So far, we've been pretty disappointed with the selection. I have been trying to help him find a stone that would at least be at the upper end of the gem appraisers cut quality sheet(gemappraisers.com). So far none of the diamonds have been up to that standard. Recently we were told at Orr's that trying to find a diamond of that type would be akin to looking for a needle in a haystack. So he's been pretty discouraged, and I'm worried that he's starting to just think "screw it" and just go for the largest size for the buck. He went to Casa D'oro tonight and they quoted him a price of 6400 for the following:
1.5ct SI1 H Table 58 2.11 ratio Depth 78 (That's all he wrote down)
I told him that the price sounded good for all of the specs, but the depth seemed way way way too high. In fact, I checked on pricescope and no one is even selling diamonds with depth higher than 72! He has insisted that the diamond looked very nice in the store, little bowtie etc. However, he and I both agree that we have been shown so few marquise's, as no one has many in stock, that we cannot be that great judges of quality in terms of light return. Am I correct to assume the diamond is too deep? I would appreciate an informed opinion. If so, could anyone be of some assistance to point us in another direction? I would like to be able to point him in another direction if I report back that the diamond is too deep. Thank you once again

Geoff

I am also looking for a marquise at the moment and I am using the gem appraiser''s chart as my guide. Using those numbers definately narrows down your choices but there are still some to choose from. If he is specific about cut and other characteristics, I recommend he look online. If you don''t see what your looking for, ask a vendor to find it for you. You''ll also be able to get the most value for your money, I believe. I find that it helps to go the the vendors'' websites to search for a diamond because more choices often come up then what you see when searching through PS. I do not know if any online vendors are located in your area, but if there is one you might be able to see a few stones in person.

Buddies!
I got my Marquise online and every number was ags 1a. AND I saw several here on ps that where mostly would also qualify as AGS 1a! It did take awhile though to get a good l/w to width ratio. Are ya even searching? I tried using several ps venders to find my stone and all failed to find one hit!
Then I was searching another website of a dude in Arizona that comments on the board and inquired about one of his stones. Well that stone did not do it, but I casually said ''Hey if ya ever find a marquise diamond with all ags specs email me. Two days later he did! Had very good sym and very good polish too. A rare treat.

Still haven''t set it though. Love the idea of two side trillians. I planned on doing pears and platinum.

May I suggest diamondexpert.com. He may not have it in stock but he looks really hard and produced for me.

PS I just read your specs and need to be honest with my opinion. A 2.11 ratio is a long skinny diamond. Not attractive to moil. Please use the shape helper thingy here on ps and see for yourself.I also think that it is way to deep.
The 2.0-2.15 ratio is good (ideal) and helpful because the side trillians will add to the perceived width of the marquise, so it appears better to go with the 2-2.25 range rather than the 1.75-2, for his setting at least. Were you happy with the bowtie effect? I''m thinking about showing him a few dealers online; he was initially looking to buy from B&M, but we haven''t found anything we like yet. Everyone seems to have really shallow or really deep diamonds, and when we protest, they basically brush us away as if we are un-informed. Sigh, very disappointing.

L/W is all a personal preference and there is no idea. Use the supplied l/w ratio viewer here and see for yourself. https://www.pricescope.com/fancy.asp

I have no bowtie! It is barely there! I tend to disagree with your trillian and width analysis and think a 1.75-2.0 would look better with that setting. But of course it is yur ring.

Those salespeople give you wacked looks cuz they want to sell u what they have in stock. Alot of what they have in stock is not so good. Most are not gemologists. Buy your diamond online for a better price and great service, No one here will mock you for wanting to know the depth of a diamond you are buying.

They also can search tons of stones in no time. You will need to look hard for a great Marquise.
